Paint Estimate for BMW

Is it fair? Use a roller and paint it yourself. You want them to paint your door really nice blend the door painting to the front/rear panels, no overspray on anything and do it for what you think is fair. That is a fair deal good luck finding anyone that will do that under that price and expect top do it again after the paint begins to flake again. You get what you pay for. Go to Speed-o-Paint and get the whole car done for less including drips, runs and errors.

Never said it wasn't fair, just questioning if it is reasonable. I would assume anyone else would do the same if they didn't have experience in that area.

Reasonable if you are the painter yes, if you are paying no. Where do you live, how old is your car. I pay 2.39 gal for gas in Central TX and that is reasonable for my area, for 5.98 gal in CA is that reasonable for them, I don't live there so I don't know.

Looks like they're taping off the jambs, so it's not going to be taking down any fenderwell components, it appears. If they do it right, it'll look just fine.

Perhaps the scan is for the rest of the paint. Not sure of the color, but metallics are a BEAR to get matched or even blended right. Sometimes the sun fading, etc., makes scanning easier for mixing new for a closest match? I'm not a body dude, but I know a few that are and they're always telling stories of those metallics and flop paints being tough to match. Especially beeching about having to re-do old, terrrible, previous work. They really hate that. I don't get into their financials, though.

My stepdad just had 1 bag on his harley painted. 500$ for the bag,1k$ for the paint. The only "reasonable " option is paint it yourself.
I know people look at me with disdain when I come to there house, charge them 1500 for 3hrs worth of work. I tell them your not paying for the 3 hrs. Your paying for the 15 yrs it took me to perfect my craft.

That looks like just the second page of the estimate. I'd have to see the first page to see how they broke down the rest of it.

Ribbedroof is correct about paint materials costs being out of hand. Literally nothing surprises me about paint prices at this point.

I don't have the estimate handy at the moment, but they are taking off both bumper covers and head lights which I know is labor intensive. Also, wheel well liners, door handle/mirror, trim from around the pillars. It's a 2-door so there's only one door to do. The color is platinum-bronze metallic so that may also be more difficult color to match. I didn't expect that that level of teardown for the door to be painted, but hey, I'm not a body man, so I'm fine paying for the job to be done right. I'm a purchasing manger for a manufacturing company so I'm always questioning every bid that comes in. 😊 Just my nature. I guess if the whole car was being repainted that there wouldn't be so much labor involved in taking panels off, etc.. 🤷‍♂️

Appreciate everyone's input! I figure there are plenty of folks on here that know a whole lot more than I do so I seek their expertise!

So prior to my owning it, someone had just the drivers door repainted on my 335i, now the paint is failing so I took it up to my local body shop (not BMW) that I've used before and the estimate really surprised me.... $1800 to paint the door and blend it into the adjacent panels. Does this sound right?? I was figuring more in the line of $1000 or less. Kinda seems to me like they don't want to mess with a small job so they overpriced it... What do y'all think? Of course i'm going to get estimates from other shops, but since my family has done business here before I started with them.

In the last 2 years paint prices have tripled. A gallon of paint that was $350 before the pandemic is over $1000 now. Its crazy.

Whut? Dang, that $1800 is starting to look VERY reasonable at this point. I don't think you're getting hosed here at all for that much labor. I was thinking it was going to be more of a tape and spray operation. Well, maybe a bit more, but yeah, once you start yanking off parts 6 feet away from the door, you're going to pay per foot. Yup, way more reasonable estimate, as it's going to take much more time to do that, obviously. Some places warranty the paint repairs for a long time, so if that's the case, you're in a good position.
