Well I was searching the Craigslist auto parts section last night and came across an 8.5 out of a hurst olds for $400. Turns out it has a broken axle, and no longer has a posi, but instead a mini spool and 4.56 gears. So any way I went and picked it up for $350. I tried haggling but he wouldn't go any lower, and I wasn't letting it slip away.

Plans are to stick it in the garage until I can afford the 30 spine misers and a new posi, gears and pretty much everything.

I was also wondering if the posi and gears from a full size truck would work? I don't see why not but just want to make sure.

I think the 8.5 truck posi would work but they are 28 spline I believe. Another option is a locker...

Here are some pics... The bearing that goes inside that hole was pretty twisted and beat up, and there were some metal shavings and a chunk. Hope it's not too big of a deal.

Pull out the axle seal and what's left of that axle bearing outer race first. Then clean up that axle tube with some brake parts cleaner or something and give it a look. As long as that axle tube isn't cracked or bent and you can get a new bearing and seal in there, it should be fine. I'd check out that brake cylinder though. It looks like it got hit pretty good. Make sure it still works and maybe see if you can find a rebuild kit for it. It looks like it has a bad boot on it.

Alright more pics...

That broken piece should be removable. I'm pretty positive that's the outside of the old bearing.

Any tips on how to remove it? I'm going to try and go in with some knowledge instead of guns-a-blazin'. Lol.

That broken piece is the outer race for the bearing. you must remove it to install the new bearing. you can use a bearing puller or if you`re really careful, weaken it with a cut off wheel and pry it out with a prybar or large flat screwdriver. Run a piece of sandpaper to clean up the inside of the tube and drive the new bearing in, followed by the new seal. When you install the seal, put a little dab of RTV silicone around the perimeter. The best to use is Right Stuff. a little expensive but the best around. It will ensure the seal remains in place and that not a drop gets around it.

Im just relieved its rebuildable.

But the axle tube looks fine, right?
