Picked up an 8.5 hurst rearend.

Looks okay to me from the pictures. As long as it's straight and solid. I just did my first rear rebuild about a month ago and those slide-hammer bearing pullers work great. On the other hand though, mine were still intact so be ready to improvise in case there isn't enough bearing left for the puller to contact.
 
that outer race is hardened steel so be prepared to get it out,But it is doable i used a carbide bit to grind it down and a chisel to crack it out.. all other tips are pretty much dead on. :wink: congrats on the 8.5 buy as well! if i recall you can upgrade to a 30 spline posi from a newer 8.5 and some aftermarket axles.. I have a 85 3:73 open rear that i plan on upgrading with those parts. 8)
 
to remove axle bearings I use a long rod and pass it thru the rear from the other side and hammer it out

I have removed the bearings with that method even with the carrier in place....I love my hammer, it's a very versatile tool..... :mrgreen:
