I was just wondering how much a rear end would cost and what the best posi rear end size is for an 85 Cutlass Salon or an 86 Cutlass Supreme, thanks.

Most people are going to tell you the 8.5 rear end from either a t-type regal, 442, or grand national. These are becoming hard to find and are very expensive. You have the option of buying a full assembled ford 9 inch from companies such as moser.

The best bang for the buck is finding one out of a monte carlo ss that uses the 7 5/8 rear end. I paid 200$ for the complete rear end out of an 86' monte ss with 3.73 gears.

One thing I've noticed as I've been digging through the scrap yards is that the Caprices (b-bodies I think) often have a posi rear end. I found one the other day that had an 8.5 posi chuck in it and 5 others that had 7.5 posi chucks. Whether our g bodies and b bodies shared the same spline axles, i do not know. But the caprices, from my observations, got a lot of posi's compared to g bodies.

I'd say it depends on how much power you're planning to throw at it. We just went through the 7.5 in my son's 81 malibu last year, rebuild kit, Auburn Posi unit and 4:10 gear. The motor dynoed at 375 HP...had it at the track with no issues yet. Not sure if you've seen Bucks price list but they sell rear ends for $80 whether ther're posi or not. The one in that Cutlass parts car may be a good candidate.

i got a 4.11 richmond posi 7.5 for 350 offa craigslist.

I would say it depends how much HP you have or INTEND to have down the road....I personally wouldn't tear out a rear end to replace it with a 7.5 rear end...JMO. That being said, when I scored my 12 bolt for $900 to my door on E-Bay a few years ago I was lucky. I bought it when I had a 305 with 200k on the clock. Then again I intended to build a stout motor. I am a$$ backwards...I am a a$$ man...that's where I started my build 🙂
