it's not that difficult, on a scale from 1-5 i give it a three. First of all you need to know what gears you are going to use, that unit is a series 2 carrier so if you want to use a gear lower than a 3.08 ie 3.42 and so on from a stock vehicle you will need a ring gear spacer, or you can buy the gears new for that carrier. If you just want to use your existing setup then you may just need a spacer depending on your gears and carrier. remember if you swap the gears you will need to swap the pinion also. if you do i sugguest you get a book. Next you will need tools: dial indicator, the magnetic stand for the indicator, a dead blow hammer, shim driver or lots of thick wooden dowels to beat with a hammer, brass punch, cigarettes, beer. i would change the bearings out on the unit also.

MAKE SURE YOU BUY A SET OF SHIMS! you will need them. If you use your exsisting gear take mesurments of the backlash before you remove you old carrier so you can set the backlash to the same amout. at this point you should use the book for more directions. I really don't want to make this a legnthy post, but it can be done in a day if you have the right tools and parts ready, this assembly is not maintenance friendly so you will have to be calm. you will have to know when to use brute force and finesse.

get a book and checkout this article to see if you want to tackle this job
