I took my 83 Cutlass to a body shop today to get a quote for some work and paint. I plan on going back with the same color just shiny again like it was back in 1983. They quoted my $3500 to fix a dent and paint the entire car. Does that seem high to anybody else or is it just me? Here is a picture of the damage they was gonna fix.

i had some small hail damage and got mine repainted back to the same color and it was 3000 thats was with a discount....paint jobs are costly these days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙁
There's alot of labor involved in prep work...never mind the cost of materials. It adds up quick. That's why I decided to paint my own car. If I screw it up, then there's no one else to blame but me. I'll be damned if I ever bring back to Maaco again.
The body on your Cutlass looks relatively straight, except for the mild crease in the quarter. If you're going with the same color, then you can probably get away without doing your jambs and the backside of your doors.
I had some driver's fender damage and an entire paint. I payed a shop $1600. I am still kicking myself in the azz for letting them do it. I was not satisfied with the work. Will probably have it painted again next spring, by a reputable shop. It all goes back to the saying "you get what you pay for." Best to either do it yourself, or save up for a good job, or you will regret it too. 😀
$3500 to have a car painted complete isn't to bad of a deal. Is the shop going to remove all trim, door handles, mirrors, lights, etc? Or are they just going to mask it off? Is the paint job going to be base/clear or just a single stage urethane?
The biggest part of the paint job is the prep work that is involved. That will make or break a paint job.
The cost of materials is getting crazy. I would take a guess that just the paint and materials alone will be close to $1000. I just priced up materials for a job I'm doing and it was $875 just for paint, clear, hardener and reducers, that doesn't include masking tape, paper, sand paper, etc.
As stated above "you get what you pay for".
That seems right to me. Im painting my car and I have around $400 alone in paint and activator. Then you had the clear coat, sealer, sand paper, sanding discs, bondo, and all of the labor. Im sure im missing some big things but you get my point.
a good friend is painting my car in my garage with me helping as much as i can
his payment somewhere around $1200
all paint stuff minus reducer( forgot it) $375
supplies $500
cost of removeing and reinstaliing front and rear windows???
im starting in mid jan
so $3500 for a shop to do it isn't that bad make sure they do all the jams
They are going to remove everything and take the header and bumper covers back down and start new on them. They are also going to replace the chip guard on the bottom of the car. I plan on going back with as close to the factory color as possible. They are also going to fix the few hail dents on the hood and roof and anything else they run into.
I got the wife's 99 Malibu painted last fall . Had section of rear quarter replace by gass door. Removed all lights mirrors. Sanded down . Chip guard bottom. And was $2700 .
My 86 442 with repaint no body work will be $3500 to take it apart and paint . And what ever the cost of getting the N.O.S. strips put on have as no shop I checked with will do it .
