I just recently picked up this 84 cutlass supreme brougham. Its white with a white vinyl top and dark blue interior. Its got a 3.8 6cyl with 124k on the odometer, power bench seat, power everything, and ralley pac gauges.
Things that are being replaced:6cyl with either a 307 or 350(both oldsmobile motors)
bench seat with bucket seats, console, and floor shift column
10 bolt with either a GN 8.5 or a ford 9in
dayton 13" rims with 20" irocs
That's a really clean Cutlass and the plans sound good but I would definitely go with the 350, for about the same amount of money you get a lot more power and a lot more fun 🙂
If you were doing it just for mileage you would be leaving the 3.8 in it. It takes the same power to push that car at 60 mph regardless of what is pushing it. The difference in pumping loses between the 307 & the 350 is very minimal. The greater difference in mileage will always come in the dialing in of the optimal gearing for your driving needs and tune. In fact my 88 307 Cutty got the same hwy mileage with the same gear & same transmission as it later got with the 509 only the 509 did use a lot more in town. Probably mostly because I couldn't force myself to use less throttle to achieve the same acceleration with the lesser part being greater pumping loses due to a larger displacement. Its hard not to enjoy that extra power.
I'm not like really worried about gas mileage cause me last car(83 ss monte carlo)had a 305 and 40$ would last a week to a week and a half.I just can't stand listening to that 3.8 sewing machine knockin around in that huge engine compartment.
So I picked up an olds 403 with a turbo 350 transmission for $1300(thank you income tax). Its punched 60 and has 11:1 compression.and the transmission has a b&m shift kit.I've got a vanilla envelope with an over $3000 worth of motor and trans work done.Luckily all work was done locally.
