I'm in the process of buying a NOS dash for my car, and it's even brown 🙂 , anyways it's mint and crack free....I wanna keep it that way. What are you guys/gals using to protect yours?? I've read that armor all is no good for them, and that vaseline is good???
Ever wonder why the inside of the windshield on your G body gets a film on it? It's from plasticizers in the PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) in your instrument panel releasing. This process is normal and increases with the exposure of heat and sunlight. PVC in its raw form is hard and brittle but with phthlalate additives (plasticizers) it can be made flexible. As noted above, one of the best things you can do to protect your G body is to minimize exposure to heat and sunlight. When the plasticizers are gone, the material will get hard, brittle and likely crack. I design and build OEM instrument panels for a living and we use materials loaded with plasticizers. This poses a problem for certain customers because they have very strict VOC (volatile emissions test) which limits the amount of plasticizers we can use. I have also heard that Armor can be bad for PVC because early formulations had alcohol in it but I am not sure how much science is behind this opinion. In my opinion, the UV protection of Armor all would still out weigh the risk and drying effect. Some say to use mineral oil or Vaseline but I think that would likely leave a slimy mess. I use Meguires M40 and keep my cars out of the sun. Check out the link below.
