Qjet shutting off in gear help

on my street drivin truck mild built 350 i had a holley 700 cfm model #0-4778c. belive i have a 850 of the same one on the cutlass now. very simple design

Bought a new Edelbrock 600cfm elec choke for it. Dropped it on and when started it wont drop below 3000 rpm. Looking in the directions it says dont use the carb on a qjet intake without a special spacer. Told the Summit idiot that I had a GM Performance intake manifold on it and he said I shouldnt need the spacer/Restrictor plate. Any ideas? Have not adjusted anything on the carb as Edelbrock ships them tuned.

"Edelbrock ships them tuned" HA HA HA! And how exactly did they tune that carb without it being on your car? That's a good one. I'm not flaming you, just in awe of Edelbrock's balls. This carb fit the intake bolt pattern OK? Or maybe the butterflys are not closing because they are hitting the manifold bore? Peek inside, look down the bore (MOTOR OFF!) and verify the butterflys are closing all the way and if so locate the idle screw and turn it down and that should drop your rpm's to where they belong. If the butterflys are hanging open then that's why they recommend the spacer. Once you get the idle down where it should be, play with the idle mixture screws until you get a nice smooth idle. Use a vacuum gauge, turn each screw in until the vacuum drops, then turn out so vacuum rises. Try for the highest vacuum with smoothest running and you will be done.

Edelbrock carbs come with a dvd explaining how to tune it, and trouble shoot it. They should be idiot proof. But I prefer Quadrajets. I bought a brand new 1406 Edelbrock carb, and eventually traded it for a electric choke Quadrajet.

Called Summit, they also state that Vic Edelbrock is a liar and that no fuel system requires no tuning. I knew I would have to make minor adjustments for max performance but didnt know I may have to tear a brand new carb apart before it will work right. I dont recommend Summit any longer as everything they said when I ordered it was a lie. They said it would fit with my EGR which it didnt at at all. Had to rig a block off plate. Idle screw is turned down and all butterflies close. Looking at the idle screws it should actually have too little RPM. The carb dropped right on other then the EGR. I dont hear any sounds of rushing air at the EGR or base of carb. Also I cant return the carb because Summit states there technically isnt anything wrong with the carb even if I have to change the guts inside because technically the car runs. Also checked the power and ground to the choke and they are good. All the linkages are free moving. I do not have the vac port on the rear of the carb used Edelbrock supplied a plug which I used with thread tape to ensure no leaks. The gasket that came with the carb is still in place as well. Any help will probably save this car from being torched!

Vic Edelbrock died in 62 so I don't know how or think Summit would actually say he is a liar...as for your carb I would suggest you have someone look at your set up. You started off with a Q-jet and couldn't figure that one out and now you have a new carb and still having issues...

You have a vac. leak at the base of the carb, thats why the motor is racing. U will have to find out what type of carb u have square bore or spread bore. Same goes for yer intake, then u can install the proper adapter plate.

Finally got the idle down. Had a machine shop make a new EGR blockoff but when I started it the idle still screamed so I mashed the throttle hard twice and it idled down. Now to get a vac gauge to tune the mixture just right. Thanks to everyone for the advice!
