I've never had a Q-jet with leaking shafts. I know that is the most common blame for a crappy idle, but I have never had to do that. That said, I think the procedure Ignitionman Dave came up with would be an easier and superior fix. Here's the topic link- https://gbodyforum.com/threads/no-drill-qjet-throttle-bushings.54605/#post-460983 Jack, people have given me lots of those "useless Q-jets" over the years and I have pirated jets, metering rods, chokes, parts aplenty from them. Working Chevy ones I've given away and I would send one your way but I just got rid of the last Chevy style I had. It went onto a '74 Corvette in place of a Summit POS. The guy loves it. You should be able to snag one cheap at any swap meet. Look for the '75 to '80 series, I find those work best and easiest to get parts for. This book is more basic, but if you are unfamiliar with Q-jets, I think it's required reading. Plus he also gets into high performance modifications. He lists all of the secondary rods too! It's dated, but so are Quadrajets, right?

Mark, I adjusted the idle mixture today using my air/fuel mixture gauge I recently installed. The gauge sure makes it easy to get it right on

Thanks Mark,
There was a local guy recently on Craigslist that had a few Q-jets for Chevy 350's for sale.

I already have that book Rochester carburetors by Doug Roe. I had a few Q-jets a couple years back that I should have held onto for parts, but I ended up giving them to a guy that I know. He probably didn't do anything with them. I'm sure some of the parts and hardware would have come in handy.

Steve you should probably start a topic just explaining why and what you did with that super gauge. I'm sure a lot of guys would love to have a real-time readout of fuel/air mixture at their fingertips. Jack, even Doug Roe admitted Q-jet parts are best sourced from swap meet/junk carbs as even back then aftermarket support was non-existent. I grab them wherever I can. The best deal ever was one I got at Englishtown swap meet for $3.00 and a lot of good work had been done to it. It ended up on a friend's Suburban that finally ran good once the Q-jet was on.

Mark,
I've run a Holley on this engine since it was built. It's been torn down and rebuilt like three times. My old 305 had a Q-jet on it...wish I held onto it. Years ago, a friend of mine (from L.I.) gave me a Q-jet that came off of his '69 Chevelle 396. He swapped it out in favor of a spreadbore Holley replacement. Years later he asked if I still had the carb, and I said yes. He wanted to put it back on his Chevelle because it was numbers matching. and original to the car. Of course, I sent the carb back to him. He was so grateful he sent me a bunch of parts.

Jack, nothing wrong with a Holley if it is sized corretly and maintained properly. A friend had a '69 Chevelle w/327 and 4 speed and swore by a small Holley 550. It was perfect for his use and he learned all he could about it. Me, I like to use the factory original Q-jet whenever possible, and if not, build one to the same specs.
