Quadrajet with no charcoal canister vent...

I was born early 50's and I can tell you that none the cars that my father, my uncles and aunts, my grandparents bought and every other car I was in ever smelled like gas.
I musta been around some crappy tuned cars then,or something was very wrong with the fuel system. A lot of the cars I've been around, especially at shows, made your eyes water, and nose run, just sitting there. Not the nice ones mind you, mostly like the ones you can clearly tell were done in a month in prep for the show. There were a few of those at this past good guys, i had to walk a few feet away from em to not be gagged out.

Either way, to end this thread, aforementioned carb has had the vent tube added by Ken at everyday performance, so my canister can stay. And regardless of other people's experiences, my car has ALWAYS smelled like gas since I removed the 231 and old failing charcoal canister right up until the point I installed a low mileage canister and hooked it back up with a new filter. I also never had a vented gas cap either, so that may have been part of it and the tank pooting at me when I removed the cap when it was under 1/2 full.

Yes and on a non vented carburetor that is the only tube that vents the bowl on the carburetor.
Sure they did. Look at this '67 carb. See the stainless spring at the front of the bowl? It is holding down a rubber disc that covers the bowl vent. It is normally closed (or open?) at zero throttle opening. Even when they stopped using the vent the casting was there for several years, as in '68. Mr. Sony: I have never seen an emissions carb bowl without that tube so that is one weird sucker you have there. And yes, standing next to a vented fuel system DID stink of gas. Now think of how many smokers stood next to a vented gas tank on a hot day- oblivious to that smell. (I think Steve LIKED the smell of gas- it would explain a lot) :mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

Mark, that was a bimetal strip that was closed until the engine reached high temperatures. There is a rod coming from he accelerator arm that would open the vent when your heavy on the pedal to equal the pressure in the bowel but moderate acceleration with the engine at any temp closes the vent. The gas cap was vented but you would not smell gas fumes from that . The crankcase fumes were also deposited into the atmosphere and I think you'd be smelling those fumes before you smell any gas vapor.

I was at my friendly scrap yard today and they had a Lemans and a Monte Carlo from the 70's. Both have their engines and quadrajets in place. Neither had the vent tube or the vent on top of the carburetor...

Steve, no vent tube means no canister unless the gas tank alone vented to one. . Maybe Canada emissions are different? Here California emissions are the most stringent so any car sold there had stuff the other states may not have. NY usually adopts Cal standards eventually. Except for cabs with the flap casting but no flap, I have never seen a Rochester without a vent tube going to the canister. Even the 2G two barrels had it.

I was also born back in the 1950`s .The gasoline was different back then .It contained lead for the octane of the engines of that time .Until 1975 When the EPA required the oil companies to remove .And today's gasoline has more alcohol Than ever before .On both my cars .My 1979 Z-28 RS Camaro and 1981 El Camino SS i still run my charcoal canisters ,even though I don`t have to go through emissions anymore ,It still helps in gas mileage by using the gas fumes from the gas tank..

Yeah I know this is a dead thread. But since I've been bored out of my mind lately I was thinking about this and came up with an idea. So, I ran a 3/8 fuel hose from my vapor canister up underneath my air cleaner to a PCV valve installed in the base. At the very least it will filter the air going into the fuel tank. I used the PCV just because it's easily removed.

That's a neat idea! And man I wish I could find some of those simple old canisters. Yours is stone age- just tank and carb- how old is that? I like that kind and use a "T" to add the bowl vent. Sometimes I need to add a restriction to the hose to slow it down or it acts as a vacuum leak.

Thanks Bonnewagon. Thats what was in the car when I got it so 86 with 231 2bbl.
