I have been looking to upgrade to the quick ratio steering box and have found a few pretty local. My question is other than counting the amount of turns lock to lock, is there anyway to tell if what I am buying is the right box? casting #'s or easily identifiable markings? Also is there anything else I need other than the box itself? Like the pitman arm or anything else?

Well I'm honestly not sure whether the one I have is a quick ratio or not, that's also why I was interested in casting numbers. My pops has a quick ratio box, but his steering wheel is a lot smaller than mine, but the boxes look almost identical. I want to know for sure...other than turns lock to lock there has to be a way to tell them apart

So nobody knows if there are casting numbers or part numbers I can check??

Casting numbers won't help you, there is a sticker put on the end of the box that tell you what the box is but that is usally long gone by now. The code on the sticker that you'd be looking for is YA, WS or HX. The 800 series box that is used came in different ratios and the best way to check is to turn the input shaft and count

Usually the the two letter designation is applied with ink, and has long been worn away. There is no casting # that would designate it as a quick ratio box. All 800 series boxes look alike, just the internals are modified.

I ordered one from Rock Auto for the El Camino $106 bucks A-1 CARDONE Part # 276550 Remanufactured; Power
with Sport Package (Z65); Option Code. For a 87 MC SS. Used my old Pitman arm haven't had any issues with it.
Ordered the hoses at the same time. because of the o-ring fittings.

Interesting - reading this thread through. I saw the "Special steering gear ratio" option in the G-body literature. Does it make a lot of difference?

Does anyone know the big "Z" cast into the top means? I replaced my original box with one from a GN and it has the "Z" on it. My original didnt. I thought the "Z" designated it as the quick ratio sport steering box....

4 screws on the top, one at each corner , , if I can remember the post right.
