I picked up a 7.5 from a mcss today with the 3:73 and the gov lock posi I need to know what kind of fluid and how much of it to put back in since I drained it to inspect before I bought it . Also what is your guys advise on sealing up the rear cover cork and silcone or both or what?

when playing with a used/old differential, I like to put thicker oil in... 80w140 gear oil should be plenty, with a nice range of vicosity. If you have a posi, DON'T FORGET the posi additive! If your posi is worn, then don't bother with the additive.

With gasketing, I like to play it safe and use both a gasket and RTV sealer. Make sure to let the RTV sit for 5-10 minutes, until gets juuuuust a little takky, before putting the cover on. For plugging up the drain hole, you can probably find a universal rubber gromet from CrappyTire. Just use some RTV to be safe.

with the gov lock DO NOT USE POSI ADDITIVE. no friction modifiers are necessary.

i'm pretty sure the g-body's never came with gov-lok. IIRC you have the eaton clutch and the auburn cone styles and that's it. the S-10 often came with the gov-lok (which BTW is a complete piece of sh*t and should not be used). if it's an eaton or auburn you do want the posi additive.
and you fill the rear until it starts to overflow the fill port.

he says he bought a gov lock. yes no g body came with one. they arent bad if you preload them for a launch. my friends has held up for 3 years now on his 383 powered 89 s10 with 125 shot. as for the oil im bot sure as i use a rear support pcover which has fill and drain plugs. i just fill till its level with the fill plug

I am pretty sure this rear is all oem as the car it came out of was a low miles untouched car and it still had the original brakes on it. and it hold like 3.8 pints of fluid

then it's not a gov lock

I used that S-10 type part-time posi in my Malibu wagon for the snow. I got it from Gevo's Gears and John said not to use it for racing. It is specifically for mud and snow. It freewheels in normal driving, then when one tire slips, it needs to rev up to the point that little counterweights fly out and engage the posi. It engages with a BANG that you can't ignore. Awsome for the snow, and no need for posi additive since the clutches are not engaged full time.

well it diffeantly is a gov-lock I guess some one changed it at one time but it still had the gm gears in a 3:73 and the spid label in the decklid said G80, GT4 so I dont know, but I do know it is in my car and is a hell of allot better than the 2:41 open rear it had
