If you haven't been on the forum long you should check this one out. Even if you are a long-time member, maybe it's time to revisit this one. viewtopic.php?f=24&t=13207
As a new member I looked it over and agree it is a great thread. What I got out of it was use that valuable commodity that is rarely used...common sense!
I would love to add to that list with two items. Don't be offended when someone tells you the truth. Or don't ask for advice if you are not going to listen and do what you already know you are gonna do anyway.
What I don't get is if you can actually spell then apply yourself and use the preview button and look over your spelling and grammer before posting and if you can't spell then I guess previewing won't really make a differance.
For me if someone post a new topic and misspells half the words in it there is a chance I will just skip over it thinking I am going to have to decipher the rest of the post.
Instead of the standard "Terms of Service" a user must agree to (via checkbox) when registering a new account on this forum, that post should replace it, or at least be added to it. It's a great post for all to see. 8)
This is a serious question; I've never posted from a phone. Is it just not possible to preview posts, punctuate, capitalize or separate sentences from a phone? If that's the case, I'll just learn to accept it as the way things are.
Everyone misspells words on occasion (myself included) so it's not like I shake my fist at the screen whenever I see it. It's the lack of effort that gets under my skin. Am I the only one that sees the squiggly red underline when it's wrong? There are many great suggestions in the thread I linked. Really, it makes us all look better as a community.
I saw a mod on another forum make a pretty good analogy once. Treat a forum like a local garage where you hang out with your buddies. Drop in and BS about each others' projects. Some faces are really familiar and some you may not recognize. You ask some questions and you lend your guidance where you can. Be polite and try to make a good impression. Feel free to joke around but try not to get too racy because you never know what the passing women and children might see/hear when the doors are rolled up. Have a beer but don't be a drunken *ss. Don't talk trash about other guys' cars and try not to get in any fights. If it's a cool place to hang out you'll want to tell your friends. If you don't like the vibe, just find another garage to hang out in.
I have mentioned on more than one occasion for some of these posters to stop with their annoying 'text speak' garbage but it is of no suprise it has fallen on deaf ears. They do it and will continue to do so until it's made a rule you can't post like that or they finally get it through their head that it makes them look like fools and will recieve more help if they put a little effort into making an intelligent post.
So I say since some people like to post incoherant babble and expect normal people to decipher it and go out of the way to help them, simply respond to these types of posts with 'we will answer your questions only if you post in an intelligent manner' and nobody help until the poster does such. Eventually, they'll ( hopefully ) get the point.
