If you're doing both engine and transmission together I suggest having some counter weights on the front of the picker for stability. Here's a thread about pickers from that "other" forum.

In my opinion HF is as good as any. Many of the rental places have them even. If I had any knock on them, it would be that their capacities are inflated and probably shouldn't be tested. Unless you are swapping out a big rig diesel, I think they will do the job fine. For me, the storage problem and initial cost was a factor and the fact that I would only be doing this one time made renting a better option. Out and in on seperate weekends was about $140 total. If you have lots of space and/or you will be yanking engines fairly often, it is useless to rent each time.
