Rarity question

That's a $200 car in my part of the country. $400 if it ran. Since I don't know how "handy" you are, here's how it breaks down (+/-):
-Initial purchase price = $700.
-Replacement used engine = $800.
-Wheels and tires = $1000
-Paint job = $2000
-Vinyl top (if there's no rust repair) = $500
-Carpet kit = $200
-Reupholster seats = $800
-Exhaust = $300
____________________________________________
Total = $6300
That is assuming everything else is in good order - which it won't be. The streaks down the side indicate that it's sat for quite a while. Expect the AC to be inop, brakes to need attention, door hinges and front suspension to be worn out, electrical issues, and more rust that you haven't found yet. Plus, you still haven't even put a stereo in it yet  .

Still want it?

Sometimes people put mudflaps in the back where frame rust starts so you cant see the bondo job they did on it. Also if it has a hitch sometimes people add those on to hold the bumper from wiggling the rear section of the frame. Rust down the vehicle like that is only superficial most can be buffed down to paint again.

$1000 is probably his high hopes starting price. Maybe worth 5-6 not running if all the rest looks really nice. Doesn't look too bad from the pictures other than the tires look like they've experienced a few things. Looks can be (usually are) deceiving.

thanks for the replies guys.I want this car as a daily driver,i've been driving past it since august and noticed it and soon then after i wanted it.I will probably take a screwdriver next time i go down and check the sill plates and underneath the carpets for rust,i'll probably offer him anywhere from $500-$750 tops. You guys bring up a good point about the condition of the car, specifically the engine,i am planning on a junkyard 307 for $75,not guarreteed running, but $75 isnt a total loss for me.I will take quite a good look at it before i think about buying it,he says he added the silicone because the vinly was tearing and put some on the weatherstripping of the astroroof to prevent the leak that it has.He did mention that he put way better gears in it than the stock 2.14 (which i fear)ratio, but we'll find out when its on the road.I'm looking for a gbody in not necessarally the greatest shape to drive in the winter and as a daily for when the cutlass salon is in the garage,so either i get this or an 86 monte carlo ls that my buddy has, even so i'd much rather another cutlass, they fit my taste better.

Around where i am,yes,700 for the car,$75 for an engine, wheels and tires i have, paint at the school would be either free,or $300 max, vinyl top w/o rust repair $160,carpet and seats not worrying about, exhaust hangers which are how much?!The car has duals with chrome pitted tailpipes and glasspacks,i'll use those.$895 (forgot title transfer)

And yes,I DO want it.

Oh, my mistake. I thought you wanted a nice car because of the "rarity" of the astroroof not some roached out POS. Good luck and enjoy. Can't wait to see the build thread.

I hate to be a parrot and mimic what almost everyone's said already, but I would offer $500. If the owner says "no way, you're crazy", list all the things that you would have to do to get it working (New engine, new tires, fix this, fix that, etc.)
$1000 is pretty optimistic on the owner's part. Even $750 seems to be a bit much IMO (then again, it IS a Cutlass, not some run-of-the-mill Monte Carlo  )

scimitar, thats exactly what i was thinking, plus along the line of two months ago,i got offered my buddys 1978 buick regal with a chevy 350,th350 trans and 273 gears, along with brand new tires, astroroof and a flat black paint job just like this cutlass, said $700 and it yours and that was a beautiful car underneath,so with all this in mind, hopefully i can get him down to a good price and get a cool christmas present!

Ouch...

Just like any car... if you're willing to pay that much for it.. then its worth it. Plain and simple.

Whereabouts in PA are you? I'm pulling the perfectly running 307 out of my Cutlass shortly. You can hear it run before I yank it. I'll make ya a deal.

I had a "rare" car for sale too, at $1000. When the buyer offered me $600 I didn't even haggle with him. I was glad to have it gone.
