so im swapping a lsd out of a camero into my cutlass my question is do i need to swap pinion gears aswell seeing as im going to a 3.40 lsd from the stock rear gears in a 79' cutlass?

absolutely.

whatever gear ratio number you are using is the ratio of the ring gear teeth to the pinion teeth, and the two gears are a matched set. no mix-matching. change one, change them both.

If you have to ask, maybe you aren't quite ready to tackle this particular job yet. Just sayin'.

i figure if i never tackle it ill never learn. only way to learn is to attack the situation and ask questions if i get stumped which is where all you great chaps come in to tell me im doing it wrong 🙂

What year is the Camaro? You sure they have the same spline count?

Its a 85' Camaro Z28 I was told they are the same if not can I use the axles out of the Camaro?

Could have 28 spline axles at which point you need factory grand national axles or order direct fits from moser. Gbody factory is 26 spline

Side note camaro axles are narrower so you cant use them. Also to accomplish the swap you need to understand pinion preload and backlash for the ring gear. Do not attempt until you understand how to properly accomplish this

It would help if you looked up the parts of a differential. When you say pinion gears those are the two gears in the carrier that rotate on the pinion shaft. I assume your taking about the pinion and crown and those two items can never be separated to use with a different crown or pinion.

That should be 26 spline. I used one from an '87 Camaro and it was 26 spline. Another thing to be aware of is that most install kits (bearings, shims, seals) are for '81-up 7.5" rears. The earlier rears, like your '79, used a different outer pinion bearing. As others mentioned, do lots of studying before you dig in. It'll save you a ton of headache and money.
