hi guys new here and not to comp friendly.was hoping someone could help me on this progect car.got a 86 cutlass and putting a 472 caddy in it from a durby car. waiting for a cross member and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions about the rearend want to put a posi in but wonder about what gear. we want to cruise in it as well as play too. any help would be app. thanks
Put slicks or drag radials on and it will eat the 7.5. 8.5 that is under the 442 & GN/Ttypes would be cheapest easiest upgrade. I used a built 200-4r and just heated and bent the stock cross member for duals. But there are places that sell crossmembers. www.maliburacing.com always has some advertised. I have put a Cad in an 88 and 87 Cutlass so I know the in & outs if you are interested. Some pics in my photo album. www.cadillacpower.com/forum is another good site for you. If you are useing a 3 speed a 3.08 gear would be ideal with a 3.23 running a close second in my oppinion depending on cam & tire size.
thanks dogshit for the info. gona use a turbo 400 short tail so i can use my drive shaft back. we have built several 350 and love them. saw a regal with a 455 thats where i got ideal. always liked the g bodys . cant wait to see what kinda torque it has. have a 81 cutlass gona put a 300 hp 350 in it.waiting on a trans for it. did you have to change out the springs?
l
nice engines, i was gonna drop it into my 83 caddy. the rear end recomendation i got from ppl for that car was a 93-96 caprice rear end. one with an lt-1
oh! and gonna be careful of what year, that 69 i had was great but i know once it hits 72 and 83 with the emissions it goes all down hill. my buddys 76 doup deville had a 500 in it and it was emissioned down to 190 hp. 😢
The first one I did had the stock springs and was a little too soft. Stock g body springs rated 346lbs. But it works ok with good shocks and the thicker factory f-41 sway bar up front. The second went into the 442 which has stiffer springs 420lbs. Its fine. If you decide to buy springs Moog sells a 5658 579lbs that is cheap and perfect ie not too stiff. Some of the older Cads used heavy cast pulleys & three belts. I used new lighter sheet metal setup with two belts & no smog from a 77 thru 81 425 or 368. BTW an 80/81 368 will have brackets to mount your AC if you want to keep it. If you are interested I have extra factory f-41 sway bars and an 8.5 rear. Torque? hahaha Even with a good posi, lower control arms, an air bag to pre load the suspension, and 275/60/15 drag radials on 15x8s the front will lift the rear will squat and it will roast em from a stop or roll. No need to hold a brake pedal 🙂 But mine has a mild cam & headers. What year is your 472 out of?
the motor came out of a1974 fleetwood had to bare it .30 left the rest stock. gona have air but smoge stuff uas already gone. its huge in the car for a test run for motor mounts but very doable. looks like i will have to notch the frame on drivers side for exaust. nice car adumb. its nice to talk to guys that have already done this. thanks again
I saw your posts on 500caddy.com. He has links for you. The Vern posting in one of the links was me. One link shows how to do the back passenger side head if you want to keep the coolant going out the back of the head. I did it just like that with fittings from Lowes. The fitting is snug to the firewall, engine centered, 1/4" to modified AC box and 1/4" to header on drivers side. Like this I don't think you should need to notch frame but I am not useing manifolds. I also used Edelbrock intake which is 3" taller than stock but with drop base I could still fit under flat hood with some hood braceing removed. Now I run that plus a 1" spacer and a 3" filter because I have the filter sticking up into the hood scoop. See pics. So do you know what the compression is now with the new pistons? I rebuilt a 73 with the small chamber heads with cheap 40 over cast pistons and decked the block for a measured 9.99-1. It runs great no knoock on 89 or premium.
read some of the fourms on caddy 500,alos talked to potter thats where i got my oil pan.he is really a nice guy. bought my kit from a place that was going out of business in huntsville al . the pistons are forged 8.5to 1 ,going to try and use the rear heater hose on the head. dont want to run hose all over the engine. got a few fittings being a plumber if that doesnt work will get my uncle to make me one. they rebuild street rods from 34 fords and up. guess thats where igot my need for speed from.probally use the pullies for now but one serp. belt looks good under the hood. gota keep it neat or my uncles will kill me. did you have aproblem with the steering shaft?
