will the rear end out of a 78 fit in a 85 car? and what are some of the numbers of the 8.5 rears to make sure it is true?

If it is an original rear axle out of a 78, it is not an 8.5. 8.5's did not become available until 1984. The way to tell which axle it is is hard to describe, but I will try. There are two little tabs at the bottom of the housing, on either side at the bottom. They have different shaped notches in the different housings, one is a semi circle, one is either square or flat ( I don't remember). If the tabs look the same as the ones in your car with a 7.5, then it is not an 8.5. Plus, the diff cover on an 8.5 would be taller than a 7.5 because the ring gear needs another inch of space.
