Alright I'm actively trying to locate either a Ford 9 inch that has been modified for a G body or a 8.5 and having little luck on either front. So I'm kinda wondering what my other options would be.

Is there a Ford that had a rear end that was the right length or say within an inch or two of the stock rear? Also what else could I yank a rear out of that would be strong enough to handle my 355 and as its looking like now a 4 spd trans. My pickings at my local yard are kind of slim there is however a second gen Camaro and an early 70's Monte Carlo, could the rear in either of these be made to work? Is there another GM rear that could be put in that would fit?

The car is primarily going to be used on the street and used in some autox races things like that engine will put out a little over 300hp when all is said and done. Car is mostly just going to be built for fun.

you can get a ford 9 houseing for $350.00 new and a set of axles 31spline 5-4.75 lug for around $225.00 ..third members run around $600.00 depends on what you want in it ,and you can just drop it out and be interchanged with other gear setup that you may want in less than a hour.also doing a rear disk setup is simple too .besides they are tough and hold tons of horse power too ...im running one for years now in my car so i could walk you threw it more if needed

Yeah I'm leaning most to getting the Ford I just can't afford to drop $1000+ on just the rear right now, that is why I'm hoping to find one that is used or convert one from a Ford car. My uncle is really pushing for the 9 as well pointing out that I could have a gear set for the street and another for the track.

I seem to remember there being some sort of conversion kit for using I think the older 8.5 GM rears as well? Is there such a thing?

Yes, there is 12 bolt swap arms available. I'm pretty sure those will also work for 8.5 10 bolts also. The biggest problem with that swap is that all those rears get wider with each generation, with the 73-77 8.5's being the widest. There is some products out there to swap the ford 8.8 in also.

what is the width of the stock rear in a g body? What would have a 12 bolt that would fit in my Olds?

A 12 bolt will "bolt in" with adjustible upper control arms. Stock lowers are fine but I would suggest boxing at a minimum.

The 12 bolt, depending on year will be an inch or 2 wider then a stock 7.5/8.5 rear.

The only issue is your present rims may stick out too far due to the extra width.

The Cutlass in my sig has a stock width 12 bolt out of a 68 Chevelle, the rims are 15x10 with 6.5 back space. 30x9 radial slicks fit with only a few taps of the wheelhouse with a BFH.
