I noticed on the rear end i bought from a friend that there was some leaks coming out of the rear end cover and one side of the axle.he said it used to leak a little from time to time.I was watching something last night on a pinion seal leaking do to pressure building up in the rear end.the problem was the vent tube. Now the rear end in my 83 is a 8.2 Chevy with 456 gears and it seems like my buddy dumped a lot of money in the carrier also. Now will a stock vent be adequate to vent the rear end or should i find something better or make one.

the stock vent is more than fine, as long as it's not plugged. the rear doesn't usually get much pressure.

What he said^^^. The only pressure is from the expansion if the air/fluid when it heats up. Seal failure due to a faulty vent is probably pretty rare. Make sure it's clear just in case.

seems like there had been a small leak for a while that was never taken care of.i pulled the axle and checked the seal,it seemed good.there is also a O ring around the axle, seems like a after market seal.all looks good.does that vent just pull out or does it screw out.the only reason why i ask is i don't want to brake it and have a bigger mess to deal with.

They just pull out. You could just leave it in place and spray it really good (from the bottom of the "hat" portion) with Brake-Kleen.
