Hey all, i was wondering if they are any speaker conversion for the 81-88 GP. the rears com with 4x10 and i wanna put 6x9 or 6.5in speakers, or anything better than 4x10s. any suggestions?

if you end up getting the 6x9 conversion kit you will either have to tim some metal or find a speaker with a small enough magnet to fit. if you open up your trunk you will see little rods going across both sides of the trunk. the magnet will hit this and not be able to fit in well

those rods at the top that are right under the speaker

the easiest is to put 5x7s back there. they fit in the recess the stock 4x10s sat in and u dont have to cut anything. the only thing i did to get better sound quality out of it was cut a fiberglass ring that screwed right to the speaker and used camper tape to seal it so u got more bass out of the speaker and most of the sound goes into the cabin of the car instead of the trunk.

I would just upgrade the speakers instead.I got some 4x10 audiobahns and they found great.also I replaced the in dash speakers with some mtx 3 ways.had to put bass blockers on those tho to keep from blowing them. But just with new speakers it sounds great. I do plan to add door speakers in the future also.

Ok thanks everyone, im most likely going with the 5x7s and see how they fit thanks jbracing.

you wont get the sound volume out of a 5x7 as u would a 6x9......but... if you buy a set of alpine, kicker, pioneer, any good speaker you will get good sound out of them.

when i put bucket seats in im building a custom center console with two speakers in. ill keep you guys updated with a build forum for it.

For my 6x9s I just ripped the top part off two 6x9 enclosures (the part you screw the speakers on), bolted those under the 4x10 holes, then bolted the 6x9s to those, no issues for 2 years so far. And the magnets aren't in the way of the trunk spring either like they would be with the adapters.

i have the 6X9 adapters in the back of my car, they clear the truck rods with no problems, and I have Affinity's in there, they have a decent size magnet. i have had them in there for about 15 years now.

I put the infinity kappa 6x9s in my car last month and there was no way they were going in using the adaptors. The speakers were about 1.25" too deep because of the big magnet and hitting the trunk tension bar. Ended up I used a trick we used to do years ago which is cutting a slot in metal seatback about 2" high and 6" long so they would mount and sit flush.
