on my 82 monte carlo. local stereo shop charged me 100 cash to cut a 4 pack in my back window that house 6x9's. i have 4 pioneers back there and the sound is awesome. the wood is coverd and look like sweet.

i had a gp when i put new 6/9 speakers in i went to stereo shop and got abd adaptors that slightly o set the speakers and no rod issues

i have the 6X9 adapters in the back of my car, they clear the truck rods with no problems, and I have Affinity's in there, they have a decent size magnet. i have had them in there for about 15 years now.

I put the infinity kappa 6x9s in my car last month and there was no way they were going in using the adaptors. The speakers were about 1.25" too deep because of the big magnet and hitting the trunk tension bar. Ended up I used a trick we used to do years ago which is cutting a slot in metal seatback about 2" high and 6" long so they would mount and sit flush.

like i said my speakers were bought 15 years ago. the magnet might have been smaller then.

Thanks everyone, gonna try out the 5x7 speakers and see how they sound.. if not then ill put 6x9s and call it a day.

On another note ive noticed on the Grand Prix's that in order to replace the front speakers the dash has to come out, whereas other Gbody cars have grills on each side you can take off.. not too thrilled about this. Any way i can get to the speakers wthout taking the dash off?

the section of the dash that covers the speakers can be removed separate from the dash. the dash stops about 6 inches before the windshield. the speaker and vent cutouts are in it so you should see where the screws are to remove that panel.

I see bolts up top where the defroster vents are. Im guessing the dash bezel has to come off as well? Cant believe GM would design only the Gp like this where all the other gbodys have grills you can access the speakers :? Oh well haha

On my 80 GP there is a spot right in the middle of the dash that I initially thought was a defroster vent but lifted the grill and looks like it might be used for another 4x10 speaker or something, but has a metal plate the size of a speaker bolted there, am I correct or WAY off base?? My car came factory with the CB radio and all that so I am not sure, and haven't done a PHS report and no build sheet, but just looking for advise?

I appreacite it!
