well my factory 4x10s were kinda neat for a while when i first got my monte, cause they just sounded like old stock speakers did new. well after hitting the volume up a little to high a few times in the past year, they just plain suck now. so i am thinking of upgrading to 6x9s in the rear. ive done research and found adaptors and what not to fit them in but i dont like the way they would sit and just dangle like stocks, seems it would just lose so much sound in all that open space. i dont want to hack up my package tray either. so my though was to to build basically to speaker boxes that mount to the under side of the package tray, set the speaker insid the box facing up through factory 4x10 opening. i dont quite know how to explain, it just was a thought that kind jumped at me this morning randomly. ited basically be a box with no top, the speaker would go into the box and be mounted on 4 little pedstals within the box, then the whole box would be mounted up to the metal under the tray. i know the speaker wouldnt be optimally placed and it sounds like a bulky cob knobbed mess, but i would improve on it as i go i think. even though the speaker would be a little lower than factory from the factory mount, it would have semi enclosure to help force sound. if anyones got any input or opinions i d love to hear it. i think i may try and accomplish this tommorow

With the spacers, the magnet of the speaker is real close to hitting the crossbars or whatever they are called for the trunk. I don't know if a box would fit. you could find out for sure though!

I had some pioneer 4x10s that werent bad that came with my car and then I ended up buying those adapters for 6x9s. I just made sure to seal them up with some weather stripping so they wouldn't rattle. I have kicker 6x9s in there now with an amp and its pretty decent, btw there magnets rest on the trunk springbars with no reall isuues I think it holds them in there tight and may even prevent rattles. Actually kenwood makes some 4x10s that actually can take some power and hit pretty good for what they are, a friend had some that came in a regal in high school and I was really impressed with them. Another buddy of mine had an 83 coupe devile that also had 4x10s in the back and from the factory it had some carpeted carpeted enclosures that fit over the backs of the speakers maybe you could grab a set of those.

I have a set of adapters for sale without the hangers...

On my old 85 Bonnyville 4 door, the previos owner had 6x9s installed. All they did was use longer screws and anged then so that they would do into the 4x10 holes. This left about 1/2"-1" gap between the speaker and the dash, but they were tight and didn't move.

The car had a crappy tape deck that didn't work when I bought it. SO I installed my 50 watt per channel CD player in it. And I have to say I was more than surprized with the sound. Sounded clear and actually had some decent bass. Most people thought I had a small sub of some kind in the trunk.

Now I have an 80 Malibu 4 door, I was planning on doing the same thing, but since Malibus have enough room on the back dash, I'm just gonna mount them from the top. But I also don't wanna hack up my dash to make them fit, So I had a couple pieces of wood cut to basically be spacers for the speakers. I haven't installed them yet, but I have test fitted, and everything clears.

thats the only thing that may be a snag, those cross bars. im not to sure how id get around it with what i was thinkin. i may just make some small spacers to keep the cone from hitting the metal. im gonna take some measurements today and see what i can do. im not to sure if i will actually get the project done this weekend. my whole intent was to install new rear speakers before my 2 hour trip to a swap meet tommorow, but im torn between buying new speakers and just saving that little bit more for the swap meet, cause i got lots of parts im lookin for and i dont want to come up short if i happen to find things im lookin for, but this definaly somthin i am going to attempt, because ultimate goal was to get these two boxes made and then eventually tie them into sub box in the center to keep every thing up to the front of the trunk to keep as much rear word space as possible, i got keep room for that gigantic stroller my girlfriends parents bought for our son haha, cause that thing barely fits with a spare in there, ahh the comprimises. those bars are torsion bars that keep the deck lid sprung right? if i were to remove them and some how install some gas struts to hold it up, could that be a possibility? any one ever tryit? without lookin at it right now im not even quite sure how i could do that.

alright i just checked measurements between the underside of the package tray to the bars in the trunk, and what im thinking of may just work. the bars are 4 inches aproximetly from the underside of the package tray, the speakers im looking at have a 3 inch mounting depth, so imim thinkin if i use 1/2 in mdf it should it should bring the box 3 3/4 to 4 1/4 inches in height which will be tight but i think it will work. if it does i will post pics if anyone is interested

my awsome brainstorm was really just an epic brain fart, there is no way i could have made that whole thing work, ill settle for some 4x10s. just easier and if i want bass ill throw a sub back in there. i want to do as little hacking into things as possible, thanks for your input though

ill definatly look into the kenwood 4x10s ive found quite a few different 4x10s online but havent really reasearched them. i definatly would rather not put a sub back in. it takes up to much trunk space fr me and when i need that trunk space, i cant always take it out and put it back in. thanks for the input, i spent next to nothing at the swap meet today so i will proabably order speakers this week.
