The reason I threw mine was because the guy that sold me the car was missing the header adaptor that went to the pump. He had it held in and mounted with just one side of the pump. So when torque came in it turned the pump slightly and threw the belt. Put on a new billet aluminum pump bracket and haven't had any problems since!
After many years in a shop a serpentine belt is the way to go. When the belt snaps it is usually due to a frozen tensioner and/or neglect, you will hear it before it snaps. I converted my 82 El C and could not be happier. How many v belts do you remember seeing in the middle of the road as compared to serp belts?
My car never gave any warning signs before the serp broke. What would happen is the tensor would get a little lose, just enough wobble to quickly chew a belt up and cut it in a few minutes. Serp belts do have advantages, but the tensors are serious weak links. Systems are only as strong as the weakest link. Every 10,000 miles the tensor would suddenly fail and take the belt out. Replace both and they would fail in another 10k like clockwork. Plus I never had v belt crush a finger like the damn serp belt did, lots of bad experiences with serp belts.
