I am thinking on removing the vinal top on my cutty, do I need to put different trim on all the windows or will the exsiting trim still work. has any one taken there 1/2 top off and if so is it a pain to do what am i in for

Its some work doing it .i remember pulling the top from my buddies cutlass ,but he drove it like that forever because his paint was good underneath. smoothing the roof seam was the most time consuming part once we finally did finish it . i cant remember if he put the trim on or took the rest of the chrome off the car though.

Thank you ,, the good part about this whole thing is my son has a body shop in omaha, but being that its not going to be a BIG paying job for the shop, i will be on the back burner, but it is what it is when its family right,im just tried of the vinal top i put a new one on back in 05 and its still like new, its just time to change things up really tried of the diamond white pearl too to many whie cars running the streets

The trim is not removable from the glass. You will have to get quarter window glass off a hardtop car. New quarter windows are not available anymore so you will need to find used ones. GM performed poorer bodywork on Vinyl top cars because the vinyl hides it. All the body filler in the rear quarter roof seam will have to be removed and replaced with fiberglass reinfoced bodyfiller or lead. The seam may also have rust damaged that will require welding, not a bad idea to tack weld the seam some anyway as GM only used one spot weld. Also the rear windshield frame won't have the studs for the rear trim.

I was told that i will have to replace the back window-- so many different answers from some many different people this is nuts

Your welcome, I started converting my vinyl top Regal a few years ago and still have a few issues to resolve.

you have a cutlass

You will need the following
5 piece cutlass back window trims.
Hard top quarter windows
New trunk filler (easier to replace than grind off the tabs on it

If you need any of this let me know as I just parted 3 cutlass supreme and have the items

You will need to DO the following

Remove the back window. It's easier to do the work with it out.
Install rivets to hold the new rear window moldings on
Cut off all the tabs that hold on the clips across the B pillar and the roof
Body work. It's not that big of a deal. The vinyl top cars may need a touch up where they are leaded.

You can remove the old one and then put some foam then replace the top it will look 100% better and you will leave it the way it was built.

he is looking to remove the top completely and to do it that way would make any future projects to the roof a huge pain in the *ss,
