Im currently replacing my ring and pinion in a gm 7.5". How do I go about setting my pinion depth? My boces teacher and i have spent three days trying to figure it out. I think we're close but i need an extra person to help out
Yeah we tried looking everywhere. I have an original 1979 chassis manual that basically goes over everything in the car and amazingly it doesn't have pinion depth.olds307 and 403 said:I measured my old one before removing it. There should be a spec for it.
Bought summit gears to fit on my carrier. Everything is torn apart alreadypontiacgp said:Are you using new gears or are they from another rear end. If they are from another rear end then the pinion will be shimmed to be at the right depth. The depth is measured by the pattern on the crown gear and it's adjust by the shim under the bearing. You need a bearing that is ground so it slides on allowing you can change the shims easily to get your set up. You have to assemble the rear using the old crush sleeve to check the depth each time you change the shim. Once you have the right shim then you can install a new bearing.
