Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Yeah, I spent months trying to get my rubber valve cover gaskets to work, and yet no cigar. Cork with RTV is your best bet. Make sure you use RTV though, dry cork gaskets aren't worth sh*t.

Well I f'd this simple job up. Ended up stripping one of the bolt holes and said f**k it. I was trying to hurry because it was getting dark and misting. So I'm bumming a ride to work tomorrow and going to maybe look for a new DD.

The engines not worth putting money into and the trans is on its last legs. So it may be smart to retire her for the winter and start putting money into finishing my LT1 and a 4l60e. Now to better money management. Lol.

I sounds like getting a daily driver/beater might be in your best interest. As for gluing down your valve cover gaskets, I normally use a thin smear of RTV on the valve cover side to help keep the gasket in place, and nothing on the cylinder head side. It's always worked for me.
Hope your stripped thread repair works, and holds up.

Alright well I have tomorrow off so I hope to get the thread fixed. And should I be worried about any metal shavings in the bolt hole?

I guess I'll give the permatex a try.

Quick question if anyone has the holley M/T aluminum valve covers on a sbc, how long are your bolts? My stock ones were way to short so I went to lowes and got some 1" ones. Just wondering if 1" is the right length or not.

Don't worry too much, I stripped a thread in my passenger side head doing the same thing. Get a thread chaser and run it through, see how it works. Worked for me. Don't use a tap if you can help it. If the thread chaser doesn't work, try a helicoil. A little more of a job, but they work well and hold up, they can be done in 20 minutes if you are careful. I might try the permatex stripped thread repair first though, it is my understanding that it works well.

Damn I already bought the rubbers(that's what HE said lol) and the RTV. oh well.

everyone has there preference in what gaskets they like using. I myself am more towards the rubber gaskets with a thin coat of RTV. the cork ones, to me, suck, because they're easy to tear, wear out quicker than rubber and when you go to replace the cork gasket, it tends to break off in pieces and sticks severely to the head and valve cover. to each there own I guess.

Why not try the reusable valve cover gaskets from Felpro? Sure they are more expensive but no need for rtv and they are reusable(obviously). They have like a rubber outside with a thin metal core. Work great for me.

Well no one in town has the permatex stripped thread repair kit. Heli coils are expensive so I guess I'll just break out the tap and dye set.

Wish me luck.
