Here is some info for the 78 Monte Carlo transmissions and what was available for that year, looks like v6 models got 3.5 first gear 3 and 4 speeds.

Holes were not tapped for shifter plate on the Monza/Vega if I remember correctly. Shifter mounted to the floor. I stand corrected , didn't realize they made a low gear 3.50 1st for G- body's but it makes sense for a V-6

I know Saginaws aren't very strong but I wonder if the steeper geared Saginaw available on the V6 is at least equal in durability to the more mildly geared one on the V8's?

OK , let's just do this. Saginaw 4 SPD vs Muncie . Everything is going to be determined by how you are going to drive. Gear ratios ,slicks , Street tires etc.

They're not weak as alot of people think. They are all fairly durable since regardless being behind a 4 banger, either 6 cylinder, or V8 they use the same parts other than the specific gear set.

All I ever used have been ones that backed 4 bangers. I had a '72 Monte that weighed over 4000 lbs according to the build sheet that had one back a built Chevy 307 & never an issue hammering on it.

I got the 3.11 first gear in fact 2 of them just for a spare , lol. But the 3.73 rear end is a little much.
