What are the gear ratios of the Saginaw 4 speeds that came in the 78-80 gbody's? Yes, I've seen the info on the different Saginaw ratios determined by the number of grooves the input shaft has but which one ( ones? ) came specifically in the Gbody's?

The Saginaws that came with 78-80 A-Bodies with a 305 V8 was the no groove 2.85 first gear with 2.73 rear gears. That's what it says in the '78 service manual. V6's got a different trans. I believe some were 3.5 first gear 3 speeds.

Cool thanks. Friend of mine might by a gbody with factory Saginaw and wants to keep it pretty much original but thought perhaps if you can swap in a steeper geared Saginaw that would help give it a bit more kick.

Oh yeah , the Saginaw 3 and 4 speed will bolt right up. The difference will be the shifter . The Monza / Vega has a torque tube which will require a different shifter set up.

I may have a 3.11 (2groove) in the shed , brother. Always good to keep a spare . With these.

The 3.50 1 st gear was Monza/Vega
All my Vega Saginaws I picked up were 3.11 1st.

The tail housings has the 3 side mount holes for the shifter like the non torque tube tails. If I remember right, the '82-'84 F cars used the same type tail.

Here is some info for the 78 Monte Carlo transmissions and what was available for that year, looks like v6 models got 3.5 first gear 3 and 4 speeds.
