Sandblast with sand?

Tractor Supply sells an abrasive similar to Black Beauty called Black Diamond. It is a coal slag abrasive. You may want to use the Fine grade. My friend had a problem with his Harbor Freight blast cabinet's gun clogging until he switched from Medium to Fine.

I have used that process too. IT WORKS! Amazing how it dissolves rust. Really good for manifolds, castings, things you can't get at any other way.

I am supposed to get that stuff from the Craigslist guy. The Black Diamond site says you need a 1/4" nozzle with the 20/40 medium grade. He says that's what he used and it was OK. Besides the HF gun I have a Tri-Con gun with a 1/4" nozzle, and it is worn so I just ordered a six pack of new nozzles. Should be good.

Well, I drove about a 100 miles both ways and grabbed 5 bags of 20/40 medium grit Black Diamond media. One bag fills the hopper and MAN does it work! Much better than sand, no dust, no mess, rust and paint come right off. 565bbchevy, you were right on, coal slag is great! I did some motor scooter parts and they came out really nice, already coated with epoxy paint.

I am glad it worked out for you but man that is a long way to drive for sandblast media.

I live in NYC, and while the media was cheap to order, shipping was insane. So since all the options I found worked out to around a dollar or two a pound give or take, this ended up being only fifty cents a pound. I know if I lived in farm country I could find 50lb bags around ten bucks or less but I'm a long way from farm country. So driving almost to the end of Long Island for 5 bags was not so bad, the guy was cool, and I now have 250lbs of great media for $125.00, plus gas, but my beater gets 30mpg so that was not a hardship. I probably will never use it all but it's nice to have.

And traffic on the LIE goes back to crazy starting Sunday, so I'm sure you enjoyed a local road trip while it was easy!

As luck would have it, my destinations were at exits 64, 68, and 69, and early that morning at exit 61 a semi crashed into the temporary overpass supports, closing all three westbound lanes all day. When I passed by they were diverting all traffic onto the service road and it was backed up four exits. Needless to say when it was time to head home I scooted south on 112 and took 27 back to the southern parkway. What I don't understand is why at around 2:30 every day the roads are flooded with rubberheads driving 100mph, jumping from lane to lane and tailgating. Do they empty the mental hospitals out and hand out car keys, or what?

You will probably be passing the extra bags down to your grandkids.
