ok last fall i picked a new 2nd hand set of hooker comp header set from a member here in wisconsin. i had to make a bend in the no.1 primary tube so far so it would clear the engine mount bracket that attaches to the block and had to trim the gaskets that come with the kit to match the exhaust ports in my p&p 441 heads. kit come with the 3/8'' header bolts that have the 6 pt 7/16'' head. some of these bolts mainly the rear 2 by the firewall i cannot even reach with a wrench. only thing i can think of is to lift motor up and out a bit the reach them or bend/cut up a wrench and make a tool to get around the angle to tighten them. its just too close to the header tube to get a box wrench on it. looks like i won't be able to torque all the bolts i guess. what have u guys done? i can use some help 😳

I used to use the 3/8 head headder bolts and had no major issues. Another way around this issue is by using allen head bolts you can then use ball style allen sockets and have zero issues with header bolts.

i bought a shorty wrench to get to the last bolts. you may not a huge amount of torque but it's enough.

350

ok. i'll try using a stuby wrench and if needed i'll customize a wrench.

anybody use washers or lock washers with header bolts?

I never sed lock washers just make sure there german virgin gutentight

headers

ok, i had to bend some of the tubes a little more around the bolts. some of them are factory notched but needed touch ups but they did not notch room for a wrench on the back 2 bolts of rear primary tube. i torqued them to about a dam good 35 ft lbs. so lets see what leaks during and after engine breakin either this weekend or next.

more sh*t

calling out to all those who have done the 350 to 700 r-4 swap.

ok i seen a potential problem. i haven't hooked up my shift linkage yet but from seeing it hanging there beside the driver side 3'' collector i don't think the shaft from the pivot point to the trans will clear the collector.

also, do i reuse my bracket that come stock for a 350 trans that attaches to the shifting shaft(bolt, stud, etc, whatever) or the one i have on it now that come stock on a 86 caprice?

once again all help is greatly appreciated! 😀

wires

how do some of you route the starter wires along the headers? i'd like to see pics of how you guys with headers run your wires and batt cable around the header so it doesn't melt.

I am in the process of routing the starter wires on my car. So far what I am trying to do is keep it as close to the bell housing as possible, and I am using a type of wrap that is supposed to protect the wires from extreme heat. I am also going to try to make some type of heat shield to protect the starter also.
