So I'm going to be purchasing a used TBI motor for my Regal and I'm going to be converting it to a carburetor. Summit and Edelbrock both make intakes for TBI heads. However there are tons of used intakes on Craigslist for a lot less but they are for 86 and earlier heads. I've been told you can make the early intake fit the 87+ TBI heads by elongating the four center holes. Is this correct? Has anyone done this, and on a scale of 1 to ghetto, how "hack-job" is it?

Any chance we could just talk you into a better engine to start with?;)

Sure if you can find one in the same pricr range.

Anyways I just talked to the machine shop and he said he could mill out the holes straight and then mill some flats for the head of the bolts.

After a little research it looks like I can probably use a rat tail file and open up the holes myself, then make a spacer out of some aluminum bar stock. It seems quite a few people have done it with success.

I opened up one quick with a Dremel and never had any leak issues using felpro gaskets. It’s pretty low on the ghetto scale compared to some of the “engineering” I’ve seen.

I acrually found a newer Edelbrock carb and a Summit (Weiand) intake together for $150. I know nothing about it other than it was on a farm truck that a guy used around his farm and he scrapped the truck but kept the intake and carb since they were newer. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow, but I wanted to make sure I could actually use it before I went and bought it. For $150, I'll take a chance.

I have seen it done, exact same situation, going from TBI to a factory Qjet intake. A few minutes of reaming is all it takes.
