Have a quick question. What are most distributor gears made of? Jumped timing last night and it ate the teeth off of the distributor and seeing the easiest way to get all the shavings out.

ouch! you got a pic of this dizzy? is it the stock one or aftermarket? im thinking yer gonna have to take the motor out to get the oil pan off to get to the oil pump to clean it out proper. there may be another way, but im not sure.

most MSDs use a bronze gear but they can be swapped out for a steel gear but it depends on what the gear is on the cam.

bronze gears get eaten up really easy..

Stock distributor gears are a similar metal to the cam itself. If you have a billet cam you need the appropriate distributor gear. Melonized? The teeth wore over time and did not likely break off. I would suggest a couple back-to-back oil changes in addition to some strategically placed magnets on the oil pan and oil filter the help attract the very small particles still suspended in your oil (obviously magnets won't do much with bronze residue). Whatever possible damage has already been done in terms of bearing and oil pump wear. Keep an eye on your oil pressure and try not to worry about it. At this point it's either okay or it isn't.

Most MSD's come with a steel gear from MSD, you typically have to swap to a bronze gear if you need it
