SCAM in the making! But luck and a UPS tracking number random check saved the day!

WOWSERS!!!! That story made my week! Now, know any Bikers in Cal? Google Earth verify the address, and Mr. Xu. Give them $1000 to do a "welfare check". Heh heh.

Man I hate that, but glad the scam backfired (in a way).

I work on campus (UNC Charlotte) and we have a few blind customers that come in. I'm pretty friendly with one, and he asked me to help him withdraw some money out of the ATM a few weeks ago. Of course I agreed, and didn't think twice because I'm not a slime ball, but the whole time I was cringing knowing that there are plenty of other people who wouldn't be the least bit honest. Its a shame we have a flood of scammers who will pray on the weak, innocent, disabled, and the ones who just don't know any better.

If he withdrew the $9,000 in one withdrawal didn't the bank question the unusual large withdrawal... 🤔
Found out that they did ask, but he said it was for home improvements. Point is, they convinced him if he talked to anyone else besides them about it, they could be involved with his identity theft. And what's really weird, they just asked if he could get up to $9K from the bank. It's a good thing they didn't tell him to get all of it. Maybe that's what fits in a 6 x 6 box. Which is what size box they specified.

For a guy that cant take care of himself he has 9 grand laying around?!?!?!?!!??!?!?!
He doesn't spend everything he earns. He's still got a tidy sum more they could have snagged. I think they were actually trying to infiltrate his accounts and really do an identity theft on him.

it could be he got some funds when his mom passed away
Actually, that's not coming until the end of the month when the debtor hurdle of probate is over with. He can likely go out and afford to buy a new truck with the incoming share. Plus, like I said, he gets her house. But he won't spend that money cuz he's cheap. Many years ago I told him to pay himself first by saving money, then use some to help others, and then make sure his bills are paid. So he started saving his $$ and sends a little to St. Jude's hospital for children and makes a donation to a local animal shelter. He did have more laying around but he did buy a used truck a few months ago and paid cash.

It's his money. It's not ours to decide what he does with it. He's a grown-azz man. But it was his idea to ask for help this weekend and to me that is a major milestone. So my wife stepped up and she's now on his account too. She's not giving two craps of what he spends his money on. It's not like he's getting an allowance or anything. But if he goes and withdraws over a certain amount per transaction and/or daily total, she'll get a text and can at least call him and find out if things are on the up and up.

Capital one does this with my GM Family First Master Card. I set my limit @$200 so if anything goes over that, I get notified. It's always me when I get the notification, but at least I'll know if some other tit-wank tries to grab my $$$$.

The thing that gets me the most, is that he's such a stingy bastage, he keeps most of the stuff in the house unplugged if not using it, etc., and keeps his bills ultra-low. Chincy for the most part. But how he could let some azzwipe stranger on the telephone convince him to send a box full of money across the country to a place he's never been....beyond me. Way beyond me. I'm still resisting the urge to smack the shiit out of him.

Kinda same thing happen to my grandma few months ago someone posing as me tells my grandma I was in a car wreck I need money cuz I was going to jail told her don't call my mom and dad they'll be mad got my grandma all upset she hung up the phone and she called my mom anyway to see what was going on I happen to be there and was able to tell my grandma I'm okay and it was a scammer trying to get money but good thing my grandma still called my mom to see what's going on as she knows I wouldn't be calling her for money she was just happy to hear me saying I was okay

A guy from work called me last year and told me his friend was on his way to deposit a cashiers check that some company sent him so he could deposit it in his account and then write checks for their suppliers and in return he keeps a couple hundred dollars for his troubles, I instantly said "SCAM" no one is going to pay you to write checks.
Well apparently a couple days earlier he deposited the first cashiers check of $2,200 and wrote all of the checks equaling $2,000 so he thought it was legit because the bank accepted it and was on his way to deposit a $3,900 cashiers check which my coworker talked him out of it but a few hours later his bank froze his account from being overdrawn and he had to pay for the bad check and then all of the penalties.
I told my coworker it only takes a few seconds to look up "cashiers check scams" on the internet and I was in disbelief that someone would still fall for it

It just goes to show you how many vulnerable (naive) people are out there. Some of these scam calls almost sound convincing. "This is the IRS or social security"...blah! blah! blah! Unfortunately, not everyone is savvy enough to just hang up...or better yet, don't answer at all if the number isn't recognized.
I think about people who have mild dementia, or just elderly people who are lonely and need someone to talk to.
I'm glad that the $9000. ultimately did not get to it's intended destination. Make sure your BIL contacts you and consults you before thinking about sending anyone money. I hope this experience made him a little wiser and less trusting.
It's too bad he lost the amount of money from the gift cards, but again, it could have been worse.

2nd party approval with withdrawals over 2k in the future?
We discussed that, but no. It's not our money. It's his to save/spend/waste, etc. We're not going to baby-sit his finances or dole it out like an allowance or anything. He's doing a decent job of saving money on his own. This is actually the first time he'd done something crazy. It ranks right up there just shy of putting it all in a pile and burning it.

We're setting up alerts that are far less than that. We also had him to commit to contacting us before thinking about spending anything over a $500 check or withdrawal to give us a bit of time to ensure he's not a prey to another scam or anything. But the bank will let us know if he doesn't let us know. Ve haff Vays of knowing!!!
