Hi,

I have an 86 GP that I bought last fall, ran for a month, and then stored for the winter. I started it up around Christmas time and it ran like a champ. put it back until 2 weeks ago.

When I started it up, it ran for about 10 seconds and quit on me (it's cold and the choke cable is missing so I didn't suspect anything) when I tried start it again, it wouldn't turn over. stuck solid. I even broke the gear on the starter trying to get it to turn over.

Anyway, at this point I have the bright idea to check the oil (just in the nick of time, eh? :? ) and it's almost dead empty so I know i've screwed it.

What i'm asking is what should be my next move? I do have a good 327 i could get put in but i'm no expert and would have to pay a pro to get it put in. is there anything I can try? i've put some penetrating oil in the cylinders and put a breaker bar on the crank but no luck. could it be something in the valvetrain? should I take the covers off and... umm... something?

thanks for any help at all,
Mollinman

chances are that it's seized in the bottom end. there's no better way to learn about engines than to be in your situation.
when i seized my 305, i was right where you are, i knew enough about my car to tell that the motor was seized, and perform some simple repairs.
it's a simple project, and i vote for swapping in the 327, myself.

the things about the swap that will give you a hard time are things like setting the initial timing, or tuning the carb to the new motor.

if you have a few bucks to burn, go buy yourself an engine hoist (the one they sell at harbor freight will be sufficient), a decent set of craftsman tools (you're bound to break a few) a haynes manual, and a torque wrench. the best resource you'll have is a digital camera and the internet. take lots of pictures of everything you'll need to disassemble and label your electrical connections and vacuum lines. ask questions if you get stuck and have a friend nearby who can help you with cumbersome tasks like maneuvering the engine out of the engine bay.

if you have a good place to work, you'll be in good shape.
good luck

Go get some Marvel Mystery Oil take out the plugs and put about 2-3 oz. in each cylinder. Rock the car side to side, sounds funny, and get the oil to move around.

Take the valve covers off and dump a few cups all over each cylinder head.

If you can do it drop the oil pan and put some of the Marvel mystery oil in a spray bottle and spray the whole bottom end. Put the pan back up.

let it sit for at least a week or 2 if you can and then put a bar in the fly wheel and see if you can break it free. Hopefully if it does you didn't seize the rings to the walls and pulled them off the pistons. If you get it to move, put some regular oil mixed with marvel mystery in the engine and see if she starts. You will have a very hard time trying to turn the engine over by hand with plugs in it,not sure if you know that but just in case.

You didn't run it that long and it was cold out so that might be a good thing.
You said you used penetrating oil, what kind?

What state are you in?

If it doesn't work then you will have to swap the engine or you can just ignore everything I said and swap it anyway.
