I have been following Kory's steam engine build for a few years and thought I'd share it since it's one of the most ambitious projects a small group of people have undertaken that I'm aware of.
It's a real cool read/view if your into anything mechanical or heavy equipment, it's damn impressive.
Kory started in his 20's working to replicate the largest steam traction engine ever built. Originally built in 1904 by Case in Racine Wi. 8-9 were built as prototypes but all scrapped over the years and never went into production because the demand really wasn't there and metallurgy wasn't advanced enough to handle the power in the transmission.
He spent a dozen years and somewhere around $1 million building it from scratch from the original prints. That sounds insane but most running steam engines sell for $100k-$400k depending on size and rarity so $1m for the biggest one from scratch isn't bad.
Through the process he ended up buying a foundry and starting a few businesses down the road so there's that attached capital too
170hp 5000ftlbs of torque. 115 year old design. Saw it in '19 and the show was cancelled this year. Hope to see it in '21.
