Last weekend my shift cable in my 86 Monte SS broke, so I ordered a new one from MikesMontes. I got the cable installed no problem, however when trying to put the car in P or R the cable bunches up rather than pushing the linkage forward. I have tried adjusting the cable with no luck, also none of the column linkage is currently installed.

This is frustrating the hell out of me, hope someone can help!

If you haven't changed the the mounting bracket, it looks like you have the wrong cable. To use that cable you will have to move the bracket back. If the holes don't line up you will have to either re-drill them or possibly modify the bracket like I did on my El Camino.

I have not specifically checked the length vs the original cable. I have not yet removed the new cable from the car but from looking at the old cable I am assuming that the rod at the end of the cable is coming too far out of the center metal shaft inside the dust boot and exposing the cable where it is pliable enough to bend rather than push.

It almost seems like it could be the incorrect cable no allowing enough forward movement before overextending and the length between the clip on the trans and shift lever is very tight. I have been assuming that getting it from Mike's Montes I would be ensured it was the correct part.

I see that there is a lot of debate online about what shift cable may or may not be correct for this application. Does anyone have a confirmed good part number that should work?

it's always a good thing to check the new against the old just to make sure. Can you move the bracket on the transmission by hand to change the gears? It may be the right cable and the problem could be the link from the steering column may be binding

Yeah, n00b mistake not checking it. I just assumed that Mike's Montes would have the correct one..

I have all of the column linkage taken out of the car, and the gear selector on the transmission moves okay by hand

I just ordered the Y239 cable from Rock auto on a hope and prayer that it is right :? There is a lot of confusion online on which one/s are right

No, it pulls all the slack out of the cable. The detents are all properly aligned and cable properly adjusted

if you ask me there is something wrong with the cable. It sounds like it is the right length and the bracket moves by hand to change the gears
