Venting ? Maybe.
I own a 2013 Silverado crew cab 4x4. Been driving GM trucks forever. My last truck was a 2011 with the same 5.3. I got rid of it 3 years ago with around 90K on it. The truck had pistons and rings put in at around 29K ? Lots of issues due to the DOD/AFM.
I bought the '13 from a dealer in MD. One owner. 21K on the clock. The truck was mint. Now its got a little over 67K on it. Its been in twice for issues with the oil pressure. The dealer said it was the sender, then the sender and some screen that they didnt replace the first time.
Last month the check engine light came on. Truck was running a little rough. Scanner said the #1 plug, wire or coil. The plug was oil fouled. Caked with crap. Replaced the plug and it seemed like it was good. Two or three weeks later the check engine light came on again. My buddy that owns a shop usually plugs his reader into it but he didnt have time to do it for me. He told me I was a bonehead for not replacing all the plugs the first time. So I bought a set of plugs and new Delco wires. The original wires had a bit of corrrosion on every terminal. First plug was soaked with oil. The # 6 plug was also oil fouled. After I was done the light was out. Easy right ??
Two weeks ago the check engine light came on again. The other thing that I noticed was a drop in the normal oil pressure. Start up its a little over 40lbs. Driving at 65-70 the pressure drops to a hair under 20lbs. Im thinking thats the reasom the light comes on.
I ran out to the local dealer last Friday AM and told the service manager what was going on. Truck was going in this Tuesday night so they could start working on it Wednesday.
Today Im driving down the road and all of a sudden chimes start dinging. At first I thought it was the seatbelt. Looked down at the dash and the oil lights on along with a message at the bottom about no oil pressure. Shut the truck off. The oil pressure gauge was at 0.
Had to wait over an hour for the flat bed to tow the truck to my house. $100. Now tomorrow I have to call the dealer and find out what to do next. Hopefully they have someone to pick it up but most likely Im going to get stuck with another towing bill. Ive got a GMEPP extended warranty until 11/22 and 96K miles with a $100 deductable.
Im thinking this is going to be an expensive repair. Hopefully the dealer will just do a long block and get it back together but we'll see. Sad thing is I really like this truck. UGH.

See if they will let you have the 5.3 core for a car project...

I've been looking for a truck/SUV 10-15 and I've been seeing lots of reviews on how they have oil consumption issues and it's not been properly taken care of by GM I hope you gets yours fixed let us know what the problem was

I had a early production '08 with the 5.3 & must of been an odd ball cause it didn't use oil but it did get the oil changed every 3000-3500 miles. Now it did have a #7 intake lifter eat itself around 125k which inturn wiped the motor out. Then 4 months after the Jasper swap I ended up having the oil pressure switch fail & give the same warning. Shut down, checked the oil (which was just changed the week before), all was good, restarted with good pressure. I picked up a ne switch & had they guy who didi the swap change it out. BTW, my opinion is the '07-'13 trucks are some of the worst of the GM trucks.

Once you understand the system, and its pitfalls, they aren't hard to fix. Make sure to get the revised VLOM too. Or just do the delete and be done with it.

Mike - tighten the valley cover bolts. The DOD system is leaking at the seals under the valley cover.

It's the end of most every DOD motor. The motor in my car presently I bought for core value due to 'lack of oil pressure'. I watched it drive in the shop and be pulled and when I found the valley cover bolts finger tight I gave the $250 for the core. I deleted it with a valley cover delete, new set of lifters - used pushrods, and been running it ever since. I put a new oil pump on it for good measure. Along with SS2 cam and PAC 1218 valve springs I have a $1000 total in a motor that makes over 800hp.

My 2008 5.3 has 188k miles of abuse on it. It doesn't foul plugs or use oil. It did have a DoD lifter tick for probably 60k miles and then I did a DoD delete. I can't imagine needing to put pistons and rings in it.

My brother's all stock 02 5.3 has 190k miles on it. It runs like a Swiss watch.

I'm surprised to hear about these issues but my brother's truck doesn't have DoD and I did away with it 8 or 9 years ago.

Take the easy way out and unplug the MAP sensor on the brake booster. This disables the AFM and noticeably reduces oil consumption. There is also a TSB out there for the LH6 that I've been trying to motivate myself to do on the wife's Envoy, but aside from a bit of oil consumption the motor has been a peach. Just cracked 100k on it.

Think we replaced PCV baffles a few years ago and fixed on my friends 5.3. I don’t remember all the details though.
