So how much have you guys been paying for parts cars?

I bought my '84 Cutlass with a locked up v6 for $300. The body is straight, interior is perfect, and 0 rust. It was on a trailer headed to the scrap yard, and I felt sorry for it so I bought the daing thing. lol.

I bought a wrecked '87 Cutlass Salon back in fall '02 for $300.

A bunch of the interior remains still clutter up the shelves in my garage...

And I bet some of it is at my house, too.

Most of the parts cars I buy are pretty well ragged out. If I find a car with parts I want/need, I try to buy just the parts. If I have to buy the whole car and can get the parts I need for 1/2 what I would normally pay, I'll buy it. If I can sell anythi ng else off it, it's more budget for my car. Most parts are junk and not worth pulling off. Then I have to load it up and haul it off. Sometimes it's just cheaper to buy the parts at full price and not have to deal with hauling ot off.

BTW, if anyone happens to have a nice Claret dash for my 86 Cutlass, hit me up!

I've paid as much as $900, but when you're getting TONS of aftermarket goodies, plus a pile of extra factory stuff, I figure that keeping what you want & parting the rest, you come out ahead, sometimes WAY ahead. Right now there's a '65 Skylark wagon I picked up for $200 in my driveway on my trailer. Figure I'll get some odds & ends for my '65 Tempest Wagon, then part it out, hopefully recouping my costs at a minimum. My 8.5" rear came in a parts car I bought for $550 and included a core Buick 455 w/HEI. Maybe I'll use it someday, or maybe I'll sell it. If you act like me, it's probably good to have lots of storage space 😳

Thanks for all the responses, guys. I may still get it. I don't see many of those cars where I am, and I've searched every wrecking yard within two hours of my house - not a single Grand Prix. Although a few did tell me "Yeah, we did have one of those, but it got crushed." 🙁

grand prixs are always hard to find it seems there the black sheep of the G-bodies 🙁

i see a lot of montes, regals, and cutlass' but few GPs

Update: I got the seller down to $350, and I got the car today. It has enough underbody and frame rust that I won't feel bad about cutting it up for parts, but there are a lot of parts on it that I can use. Plus I think it has a BOP pattern TH350 trans with nice clean fluid. It runs and drives - just no brakes. I drove it around my property today using the parking brake to stop.

Does anyone know if there is a way to tell for sure what trans is in it by decoding the Vin #?

Thanks. The problem was me not being able to get a good look at the pan, since I have it parked on grass right now. I reached under the car with camera in hand and snapped a few pics of the pan, to get a better look.

It's a TH350. With a trans cooler. 😀
