So I started a hunt for a 200-4r today. Got some questions.

So i went down to the local junkyard to see if they had any pulled 200-4rs which they didnt. So is topped by a u-wrench it just to check out what they had in the way of g-bodies. They had several there, 3 montes (one a SS) and a cutlass. When I saw the SS i got all excited to see if it had a rear end but found that someone beat me to it. It did have a transmission, but the pan was taken off?

Anyway what I want to know is how do i identify a 200-4r?

Also there were lots of B-bodies there that had [P RND321] or a circled D what kind of transmissions came in them? Wonder if could nab one of them.

you want to look for 2 things, 4 speeds, and a 1 piece case. other GM trannies have the tailshaft bolted on to the case. i think the 200r4 is also the only one with a double hump pan, one main relatively square one and one small lllump at the tail.
you want a GN, SS or 442 trans, in that order, for best performance. you may have to change the speedo gear to match your rear end ratio.

I think the easiest cars to find these trannys in are the late 80's Caprices with the 305's. I think the squad cars used 700r4's but I'm not sure. Although I do agree with megaladon6 on trying to find one out of one of those cars first, but the caprice is usually a lot easier to find. And yeah, 1 piece case and a weird double hump shaped pan.

i'm probably wrong, but didn't the B-bodies get the 700r4?

The most popular cars I found them in were Delta 88s, Olds and Chevy big rwd station wagons.

This was my concern. There were alot there that were 4 speeds but I didnt know wether or not they were 200-4rs or 700r4s

The MC SS still had its transmission, but someone took the pan off it so i couldnt tell what type it had.

There was also a cutlass that had the double hump pan, there but the dash cluster only said P RN21?

Pretty much all the caprices from about 86 to 89 were 200's unless of coarse they were squads, then they got 700's but like we said earlier just take a peek at the transmission pan. Does anyone have a pic or a pan from a 200r4 that they can take a pic of so he knows what hes looking for? If not I can put mine in the air and try and snap one for ya

Here's the pattern you're looking for. Personally, I'd look for the late 80's B-body wagons. Most of them, even the Chevy's, had a 307 Olds with the TH200-4R.

Don't forget to get the kickdown cable and linkage for the carb as well!!

Also some cheap insurance would be a transmission oil cooler. You can mount it in front of the radiator and it will significantly extend the life of the transmission.

As stated the One without the bolt on tail piece is what you want. Look for the tag on the tail on the pass side. The BR or BQ from a turbo regal or GN is best from a stock point of view. The CZ or CQ from the MCSS and the KZor OZ from the 442 are also very good for a starting point. Also the AA from a Cadillac is a good starting point.

You don't want one from a diesel as the shift points are very low rpm. Also some of the big car V8 ones are hard to get shifting at a high rpm.

A pic of the pans

Trans Codes are on this chart.

The valve body and governor are a set so you will need them both if you take the trans you found. Is the VB still there or has someone beaten you to it?

It bothers me that the pan was off the trans from the MCSS but that would be the best core to get for a high performance 200-4r bar none.
