Hi I was wondering what size speakers are in the front of a 87 monte ls? Mine are both blown and I dont get my car back until may so I can't take them out and look. I'm looking to get a few things before I get it back and I would like to go get a good set that i don't have to modify my dash for. just to clearify I'm looking for dimension size not watts. Thanks for any help.

3.5"

Another thing to note is the 3.5" is correct, but you have to avoid real deep performance ones because they will generally hit the gauge package on the driver side and sometimes the ducts on the passenger but the ducts can be heated and shaped. Also, watch for ones that have a big protruding tweeter or a high-rubber surround as both of these will conflict with most of the G-body's speaker covers.
I have seen people leave off the cover, or drill a hole into it for the tweeter.

Personally, if you are going to put a real performance system in there and not just a factory replacement, then what I do is make an aluminum adaptor there and mount a tweeter there for better imaging, then mount proper mid-range down low in the kick panels or doors. I have done several G-body installs (and even my last daily driver which was a 94 buick lesabre) with dual 4" in each door since I had them and they fit without heavy mods.

On my '79 monte, it originally came with a spot to mount a single 4x10 in the center of the front dash. I mounted a pair of 4" there and wired them together (mono) and it was somewhat like a center channel with the tweeters mounted at the end for imaging. For keeping a totally stock appearance, it sounded quite nice.

I have never had luck with the front speakers. No matter what type I buy they dont seem right. I just disconnected them and im now only running my 2 6x9 Kenwoods in the rear door panels.

You can always run cheap replacement type speakers then use your fader to play mostly your back speakers. Then, the fronts would really be more for "fill" to make it sound like more sound is coming from the front than is actually there. Just a thought...

you can fit the taller 3.5's if you just adjust the mounting tabs on 'em... had a set of Kickers and a set of MTX's in my cutlass just tweeked the tabs with a pair of pliers. good to go... ran 6x9's in the back with 4x10 adapters... 6.5's in Q Logic kick panels, and 6.5's just above the little sail panel arm rest deals... sounded great.. ran Kickers first (KS series if I remember right), blew the fronts, so I bought all new MTX Thunder Domes (2x3.5's, 4x6.5's, and 2x6x9's)... plus a JL amp... don't recall the size off hand.. Then had a 10" Kicker L5 in a ported box and a JL 500.1 amp in the trunk... had a set of MTX tweeters in the kick panels too...

I tried that but they just cant keep up with the kenwoods lol. By time I get it adjusted to where there not on the urge of blowing you can barely hear them. I like it better how the 6x9s are mounted though they fill the car better.

Well, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Just thought I'd mention it.

Kenwoods have always had good amount of midbass without a ton of power, I could see how they may overpower any fill from the lowly 3.5" fronts. 8)
