Speaking of Olds vs. Chevy costs...

I'd have to 100% agree with you. There's such a huge variance of what you can do with both engines so it makes comparison nearly impossible. You could take an older Oldsmobile engine with an aftermarket EFI setup, and compare it to an LS engine with EFI and I would guarantee the LS everytime.

Guarantee what? LS engines are great engines but they are not the end all be all of engine design.

My brother gets to deal with this everyday driving his 4.6 Mustang. All his friends trash the 4.6 because they drive LS1 powered cars and yet his Mustang is a full second to 1.5 seconds faster than most of them in the 1/4. Heck, his 403 Cutlass is about a 1/2 second quicker than most stock to mild bolt-on LS1 cars.

And how many mods has the 4.6 received over the "friend's" LS1's? A LS1 F-body would walk a 4.6 N/A Mustang 8 days out of the week. The 4.6 without boost doesn't hold a candle to the 5.7

As to the EFI Olds vs LS... Dollar for dollar the LS will win every time. The way the LS engine market has grew in 13 years it just makes the 5.0 Mustang scene seem like little school girls talking about the newest High School Musical movie. There are hundreds of youtube videos, dyno sheets, pictures, etc. of stock bottom end LS engines climbing into the 600HP range. If that's not impressive then I would like to ask you, what is.

I think he's building "what's impressive?" already FI 455 and a T-56 .... I wouldn't call Andy's car a "budget build" but boy does it sure peg the "cool meter"

AHEM! Buick anyone? There IS an aftermarket Aluminum block (and heads) for it.

Just thought I'd throw my two cents in.

:hijack: :lightsab:

Yes in that artical the sbc used a aftermarket block and with the machine work it was easily 2 to 4k of the price. Now another mag did a budget build of a truck 454 and it put down like 700 hp and they only had like 2500 wrap up in that one and that includes the purshase of the engine. So it is hard to compare one make to another makes engine fairly. Just to hard to do.

Some interesting reading about DRCE and V-8 Olds..

I've built several 455, 350 Olds Motor, 455, 400 Pontiac, 455, 430 Buick, 454, 427, 402 BBC and 357,355, 350, 331, 327, 305, 302, 283 SBC..Best bang for the Buck is an Olds Motor but cost wise it is much cheaper to build a SBC.

I wish I had some of those cars from 20 years ago. I bought and sold so many cars, I was warned by the State of Nevada, I would need a dealers license if I sold one more car...

I agree, BOP motors are worth the extra cost though I lean towards Pontiac. And I knew a guy who ended up in the Army with me because he bought and sold so many cars (without paying tax) that he was given the choice of 2 years hard time or 2 years Army. This was during Nam', so it was hard time either way! He had worked his way up to a customized 67' Vette' when he got busted.
