Anybody run a spool in their G? I'm aware of the difficulties to be expected with street driving, but the car will only be a weekend cruiser at most. I intend to get more radical as time and money permits for the track. I've got the 8.5" in with open diff and 3.73s but I think I want to step up to 4.11 when i redo the rear. Thanks

I have a Detroit Locker in my Monte and I would never run a spool on the street it is design that should only be used at a track for straight line driving. IMO
You have to remember that with a spool both tires are always turning at the same speed which means that on a tight turn the inside tire is basically spinning in place while the outside tire makes the larger radius turn and on a slight turn a spool is going try to push you straight even though the front tires want to make a gradual turn, spools are cheap which is the main attraction to them.

Dito 565 - You will only get yourself in trouble on the street. I run a spool but it is a drag car.

I'm running a Detroit Locker in the 7.5 in my 79 Monte Carlo and even that takes some getting used to.
Have to be a little less aggressive on wet roads.

Thanks for the replies. Eventually it's gonna be a track car only. Is it really that bad on the street with a spool? I've had eaton true tracs, auburn, g80 crap before just never went fully with it.

You can find many people that will tell you a spool works fine on the street and you can live with the issues of having a spool, I for one am not willing to compromise my safety for the sake of saving some money.
My Moser 9" with a Detroit Locker has lived behind multiple BBC's for over 17 years now running everything from slicks to drag radials and I don't question it's durability or street ability.

Yea it's only like $300 difference. It has nothing to do with the cost honestly. I'll be upgrading from 28 to 30 spline as well and all new bearings wheel cylinders, brakes(im keeping the alum drum though),seals etc. Will be replaced. I just want to do it right once and not have to go if in a couple years I have 700 800 hp coming from the front.

everyone says spools are bad in the rain, but that is the only time they aren't tearing up the tires or causing massive understeer, just trying to turn into your driveway. With crap, hard, not traction tires in back a spool drives fine, but that defeats the purpose of a spool.

I have actually destroyed a Detroit Locker - I thought I was upshifting to 6th, when I pulled the stick back at 162 mph (trying not to go into reverse), but I downshifted into 4th. Boom. Detroit Locker bent beyond repair (along with 13 valves)... but I won my race.

Between the two for a street car you drive, Locker. If It was a "Cruiser" I took to the track once in an while that ran 11's or slower, I would select none of the above and go eaton posi.

We run a spool in my buddy's Challenger never had an issue with it and it's a street car because the cage won't pass tech for the times he runs. He drives that car everywhere and the only issue has is he needs to make sure he doesn't get caught in really tight turns. When he does he ends up dragging a tire. Ive only run stock a posi in my cutlass but that Challenger has no issues with the spool.
