I appreciate all the input. I'm still undecided though. I'm drawn to the spool idea for the simplicity and capability for handling tons of power. On the other hand I don't want my car to end up being a pain in the *ss if I decide to drive it to work or take the kids to the beach. It's not gonna be a daily driver by any means. I can deal with some tire skipping, and I cant recall the last time I parallel parked anywhere, but safety is priority.
Car already has a huge choppy cam, 2800 stall and 3" exhaust with flowmaster 40s, so it's street manners are kinda off already.

You have gotten a advice all one way with the one exception that wasn't even his car. Simplicity isn't a factor, they both install the same and the manners of the engine has nothing to do with it. Money difference is what you are drawn to plain and simple. It wasn't brought up but there is undue stress put on the axles, studs, and even wheels and without upgrades your looking at breakage. If you decide a spool is for you don't buy a cheap one. I wish you lived close I'd let you drive my car.

Depends on what you call no issues. You already know it won't turn - try parallel parking it, try jumping on it to pass a car on a two lane @ 30 mph (on second thought don't) it's not save. It won't handle or make evasive moves. Yes people run them on the street - it's safe as long as your goin straight.

We used full spools in our circle track cars. We staggered the rear tires for the left turns. The different in sizes and tire pressure of the rear tires depended on the size of the track and angle of the hardest corner to get around and get the power down to the pavement for the straight without spinning the tires. It was hard to try to figure out how the car would be handling at 90 laps of a 100 lap race since there were no scheduled pit stops If the rules permitted us to run a locker or a posi we would have ditched the spool and threw a party. With all the available rear ends out there for street cars it's beyond me why anyone would even consider a spool for street use.

Like I said money is not the issue... thanks for the last couple constructive posts. I just want to build this rear once and not worry about it for a couple years. The car will be eventually track only. Saving $300 now isnt sh*t, i just don't want to end up spending another $2k on the rear in a year or two when I start making hits with spray or a different engine. I've heard enough negative about safety so I'm going to go the reasonable route for now.

Everything is a waste of money. I just don't like throwing it away if I don't have to. I already bought the 8.5" last year and I would never put anything with blue oval origins in my car. Those little factory stickers that said "keep your gm car all gm" are what I stick by. Sure i could have built a 12 bolt, but that's not what I wanted to do. I wanted an 8.5" out of a 442 cutlass and thats what I got. Locker it is, now it's just a decision of who is going to assemble it.

I run a 8.5 rear end with a Detroit Locker and Moser axles in my SS with a 200 shot on a 600hp 406 SBC and I have no worries on the rear end's strength. I have run a spool before on a previous street driven G body and it was a pain in the *ss. Like others have said I would definitely go with the Locker if it is going to be street driven. I'm currently putting together parts for a F2 Procharged Dart Little M 406 SBC that should make 1000hp or better and I will still run a locker because it will be street driven and the strength of the locker isn't even a concern. Just my 2 cents

This is what I was looking for! I'm definitely gonna do moser axles and want to do the c clip eliminators, and step up to 30 spline instead of 28(that's kinda a given I think).

I have a locker in mine and won't go back but I have to play devil's advocate here. I have never had/nor heard of anyone personally having issues with a spool on the street. A lot of it's just overblown, regurgitated nonsense that keeps getting thrown out there. Yea tight maneuvering is a b*tch but attributing it to potentially killing someone? Come on :rofl::rofl:

Flame on, just my experience.

I have seen cars up on there sides with casualties which is why I said what I did.

I have seen it more times than I like to remember.

To think it is funny that someone could get killed is absolutely absurd.

No not everything is a waste of money. Half assing things is a waste of money.

Take a look under GM's new Chevy COPO Camaro......Comes from GM with a Ford 9 inch

Smartest thing GM has done in a long time.

Where have you seen this? I've never heard of this happening and it sounds like 83montess hasnt either. You sure some didn't just tell you bad things about spools along time ago and you can't get over it?
