Changed a few starters in my time and a couple times I needed the shims.

On an Olds or a Chevy?

Mine didnt crack from timing it just stuck engaged. I put another one in and it every once in awhile it misses and makes the horrid squeal noise so im just gonna save up for a good aftermarket one. As for shims, I wouldnt use shims unless the starter originally came with them. Its just the way I was taught in shop.

Once again, a Chevy 350 is NOT an Olds motor. As I noted above, in 35 years of working on Oldsmobiles, I've never seen nor used a starter shim.
