where do I get the right bolts? The other block used 2 4 5/8" bolts w/ the staggered bolt style starter. I had no issues. Then I bought this car and had to replace the starter and they had the washers on the outer bolt. both blocks use the same starter too. I have chased the threads in both holes and the hole closest to the pan is fine, but the other bottoms out. the bolt/tap both. no parts stores can tell me anything! all I can think of is drilling the hole out farther and tapping it all the way through or cutting the bolt about a 1/4". the outer hole seems like its drilled and tapped so far and then get narrower but is drilled out through the top side of the mounting pad of the block.

without the starter installed is part of the knurled section of a stater bolt in the hole when you install the bolt?

no the knurled section doesnt go past the starter housing. I have the right bolts from my last sbc that I held onto just in case. Anyways, I drilled the hole out with a 5/16 bit then I tried tapping the hole out and the tap seemed a little sloppy but not too bad. When I got the old bolt halfway in it stopped and wouldnt go any farther. Then I backed it out and a chunk of helicoil came with it. Also the first few threads are stripped, which are helicoil threads anyways i would guess. Is there an easy way to remove the old helicoil and install a new one? I see helicoil makes something called a twinsert that I may be able to use too.

you can use a pick to get part of the helicoil out of a thread and grab it with pin nose pliers

sounds like fun! thanks pontiacGP. I just might have to hurry and get my 350 rocket ready to drop in! every time I fix a problem w/ this engine another thing goes wrong. Gotta love old rusty midwest cars!
