My '81 Monte, Malibu & '79 Monte all came with the 800 box.
And both my ‘80 Cutlasses.

Besides obtaining a Grand National steering gear (too expensive for budget), is there a cheaper way to get a faster ratio gear? We currently have the 605 casting with ringed cover. It goes lock to lock in 3 turns. Maybe 3 turns isn’t the slowest out there, I’m not sure. It’s leaking at the ring a little bit, no too bad. I’ll rebuild for cheap no problem. But if I can pick the junkyard for a faster ratio box that will work I’d be interested.
yesThe headers in this car are wrapped to control heat under the hood. The original steering shaft with rag joint has the plastic heat shield. I'll be removing the original shaft and installing the Jeep Cherokee steering shaft with ujoints.
Am I ok "without" a heat shield on the Cherokee shaft or box?
i got a box on ebay i ts close ratio around 150 i never put it in because i put a solid u joint instead of rag joint and wow feels super tight got that at mikes montesBesides obtaining a Grand National steering gear (too expensive for budget), is there a cheaper way to get a faster ratio gear? perfect thats what you want and the u jointI have the Grand Cherokee steering shaft already fitted up. Although I'm going to rebuild the 800 box from the Grand Cherokee before the final install, I put it in the wagon to see how the ratio played out and compared to the stock 605 unit. The 605 went a little more than 2.75 lock to lock when installed in the car and about 3 full lock to lock when removed from the car. The Grand Cherokee box goes 3 full when on the bench and 2.25 when installed in the car.
