Removed the steering wheel on my 78 Malibu today to replace the blinker lever and upon reinstalling everything I couldn't depress the shaft spring enough while trying to reinstall the lock ring on the shaft. Got pissed off and got it as far as I could and put the wheel back on and finished up. Now it feels really tight turning right at first then it pulls real hard and deeper. Any ideas? Need to know because this us my daily driver. Thanks y'all.

There is a tool to compress the spring in order to remove and replace the lockplate. . Believe me, it makes life a lot easier using it.

I could push the lock plate in with both hands but then the shaft would push down like an 1/8 th inch and that was my main issue. But could that be the reason behind the pulling and the stiffness? I don't see how it could

The lockplate spring preloads the top bearing by pulling up on the shaft. Get a lockplate depressor and put it all together right it should be better.

Ok cool ill try and find one tomorrow! Thanks!
