Hi ,im a new member ,old reader tho 🙂 i now have my 86 GP tore down to the frame , and im now gonna look for some improvement parts .
This week ill be looking at a steering box from an 86 Monte Carlo SS , was wondering if anyone knows the part number(s) that would be on it , would be a great help .
Thank -You

According to the parts manual...if the 86 MC has the Z65 package, the box is # 7843135. That was used on some mid-80s Regals and Cutlasses also....if they had the HD suspension option.

Thanks

Thanks people , im glad i had the info when i checked the car or i wouldnt have known , but unfortunely the car wasnt a real Monte SS , 🙁 so im back to looking for a quick ratio box , which i now know can also come from certain Camaros and Trans Ams ,should make it a little easier 😀
Once again Thank-You

keep in mind the steering boxes from the camaro and firebird have different stops in them so your turning radius will be increased quit a bit...they use a longer pitman arm which you can't use on a G body...the F body steering boxes are used by some G body guys who use oversize tires cause these boxes will prevent the tires from hitting the frame on tight turn

Another option is to have the Stock Steering box rebuilt with the quicker Ratio. I did that with my 81 Monte Carlo Steering Box. I think it was about $180. Probably more than buying used Box, but you never know what your getting when you buy used.

I used Harry's Steering Gear and Repair in Roseville, MI.

so..... are all g-body steering boxes interchangeble? like just where the boxes mount up? i don't know what the ratio is on my stock rebuilt autozone unit on the malibu but a guy i know locally will be switching his 87 gn over to rack n pinion steering for the quick ratio. he offered me the old parts and i was thinking about it but will it just drop right in and will it benefit that much to do it?

Just avoid the ones with the round cover that is retained by a snap ring instead of 4 bolts. It's a lighter unit, but is not as good as the 4 bolt box. They are not rebuildable if I remember correctly. It was in an old Hot Rod Magazine 10-20 years ago, back when they still did some decent basic tech stuff.
